I’m pulling out hairs over this decision, as I really like both schools. I got a full ride at USC, and I would be thrilled to live in California (I grew up in Wash DC), but I also really like Penn. I’m interested in English, journalism, and film.
Suggestions?

Honestly, if you're interested in film and journalism, you can't beat USC.

i guess usc might be better for making connections near holly wood

but then again youd be one of 35,000 state school kids at a school, whos journalism/comm school primacy is debatable compared to penn's

I'm in a similar boat...
choosing between Cornell and USC... and potentiall Penn (waitlisted)
this is prob. the hardest decision I have yet to make in my life. and I don't know what to do.
I'm weighing Cornell's bad weather, but more academic environment, and unique textile and apparel management program that I might potentially minor/double major in with communications, against USC's amazing alum connections, awesome weather, and strong broadcast journalism program and the huge scholarship i got.
It pretty much evens out and I can't decide. had I gotten into Penn, this would've been so much easier.

USC is great at film, not journalism. Journalism is best fulfilled by a liberal arts education, the likes of which will be provided by Penn head and shoulders above USC.

how can u even compare penn n usc..!!.. PENN..! ivy league.. altho undoubtedly usc has an excellent film course, but the ivy tag of penn is worth more. u shud choose penn..!

That might be the worst reason to pick Penn. There are tons of great things about it, but you prefer it because it's called an Ivy League college?

judging by peoples reactions when you tell them you go to penn, the word seems to prefer....

usc if youre interested in film
but why would you even pass up penn?

a full ride at USC where you will get a great education, great connections to hollywood, above average journalism, and it's all free. Or you could go to Penn and be bogged down by work all the time and not have as much time to get the college experience like you will at USC...and pay $35000 a year! Plus, there are so many more things to do in Cali (go up north for some skiing or snowboarding, go west to the ocean, go east to the heat, do whatever you want), and the chicks are definitely harder there.

Mengchen, USC is Private, not Public. It has 16,000 undergrads, not 35,000+. Please get your facts straight.

USC would provide great connections to the entertainment industry, and is well known for its journalism program. It obviously has the best film school in the country.

Interesting to note that Walter Annenberg endowed the Communication schools at both Upenn (1958) and USC (1971)

thanks for your input.... god this is going to be a hard decision

hahaha ivy is wayyy overrated.

It seems like this question comes down to two things.

1) How much money is Penn giving you. Both schools offer a comparable journalism program, so the cheaper one definitely has an advantage

2) Where do you want to live for college, and where do you want to work after graduation? USC gives you freedom to work anywhere in Cali. Penn will carry more weight on the east coast. Though both will arguably carry a big stick, they both have a home field advantage in their own areas.

My instinct says Penn, but if it comes down to the difference of tens of thousands of dollars a year I would say USC.

But in the end it's what YOU think that matters, not what we think.

This is a hard choice and I wish you luck!

Plus, who the hell would choose Philly over Los Angeles?

Well living in philly is definitely much much cheaper than living in L.A so if money is a concern, philly is a better choice

Bicoastal, "35000 state school kids" , I didn't say 35000 ugrads.

and if people can get away with calling penn penn state, i'll call usc whatever I want. cuz im at penn, and youre not

get your diction straight, or have they stopped teaching that too on the westcoast?

As a guy who grew up in LA and is heading over to Philly ... me, I guess. For the time being at least.

Thanks mengchen, however my diction was flawless.

When did I ever confuse UPenn and Penn State? Oh, thats right, I didn't.

Just because you're bitter that people who know very little about higher education confuse your school with a second rate public university system, doesn't mean you should make the same mistake regarding other institutions.

USC = South Carolina when not talking about football for me. USC = University of Santa Cruz, Southern Columbia, South Compton, etc.
