Penn Parents Thread anyone?

Hi all,
Its great to find this thread to connect with other Penn parents. My daughter is a sophomore at SEAS and my son just got accepted to Penn ED for the class of 2018! Since we are currently posted abroad, we are so excited for both siblings to be together, apart from Penn being a great school its such a convenience for us logistically and a comfort knowing they can be there for each other since we are so far away.

Daughter lived in Hill her first year and Harnwell apartments this year, next year they are looking at off campus housing close by, which we have our doubts about too??
Hill was definitely one of the oldest and dreariest dorms but the kids liked the social atmosphere and the convenience of the dining hall. Plus its the closest to the engineering school. I’m not sure what my son will want to do yet. Is the Quad too far from engineering?

We were at penn for move in 2012 and thats it. Really envious of those of you who can drive up for a game or dinner with the kids.

Hi Ovrseasmom,
Congratulations on your son’s acceptance. My D is a freshman at Penn and lives in the Quad. She really enjoys the atmosphere there and her coed floor is quite close and social (within reason, of course). She does not mind the distance to engineering. Compared to many other universities she toured, Penn is fairly compact. Having the cafeteria right in her College House and only a few floors that share laundry has been a real perk for her transition to college. I’ve only been to campus twice now since we are a plane ride away.

Thanks @livn487. What do you find is the best way to keep up with Penn news? I heard some other colleges send weekly newsletters to parents which is great since kids can be non communicative.

The university keeps in touch. The Daily Pennsylvanian has campus news. You can find events and information on the university homepage. Roommates/Friends are good sources of info - when you do visit, take your D to dinner and offer to treat a friend or two. It’s amazing how many details they openly add to a conversation.

^ Great suggestion! Amazing how much more willing they are to discuss their lives with any parents other than their own. ;)

And here’s the link to The Daily Pennsylvanian web site:

http://www.thedp.com/

I like to click on the thumbnail at the bottom right of the page to see a .pdf of the hard copy that’s circulated on campus each weekday (includes the ads, activity announcements, etc. that the kids are seeing), but the home page is good for keeping up with breaking headlines and stories that may have been posted since the last print edition. But as with any web site, be sure to take the comments below each article with a grain of salt (or two or three  ).

I agree that the DP is a good source. I recently started a twitter acct and follow several different news sources. I do not tweet about my own life though…There is also the DP on facebook so their articles pop into my news feed. And of course, if your kids are willing, friend them on facebook. Honestly, this has been a nice way to see some photos of my d on campus. She is not so camera happy but some of her friends and hallmates post a picture here and there:)

Also, over the holiday break one of her Penn friends (who lives in the state next to ours) drove to visit us and stayed overnight. I “overheard” without eavesdropping so much about their student life-- it was really nice to passively listen while we were in the kitchen and later in the family room.

I thought I’d post it again here http://pennmentalhealth.■■■■■■■■■■/post/76246077927/why-i-tried-to-kill-myself-at-penn

Sorry to some of you, if the above post seems out of context, I found it while discussing a related topic on another thread, and I thought since we are all concerned parents, any insight helps.

My daughter was accepted ED but unable to attend the February ED events on campus. Does anyone know if ED accepted students will be able to attend the April accepted students events?
