Penn professor ques

In the question about a Penn professor you’d like to study under, can it be an associate professor?

In this circumstance whether one carries the full professor title or associate there is not problem. Pick whomever interests you.

what about a lecturer?

how do you address the professor in the answer? would you say i would like to work with...Professor Dr. name or just with Dr. name or Professor Name (just last name or full name?)

im just putting

Dr. [Last name here]

It probably doesn't matter so much in the essay how you address them, but some of them have other advanced degrees and not doctorates in which case they won't be "Dr's." This is only coming up because I"m thinking of the Legal Studies Department in Wharton where a lot of the profs have LLMs and JD's but not necessarily PhD's.

dumb question, perhaps, but doesn't a JD have the "Dr." title?

Not very many JDs use the Dr. title- it has sort of gone the way of "Esquire".

Yes, and also when you think about faculty you think research. And getting a JD is not nearly in any way shape or form equivalent to a PhD. They are certainly on 2 different levels when it comes to advanced degrees.

ok, d'u actually get to work with the professor you mention in your app if you are accepted? or does this question have nothing to do with it?

This question is new this year, I believe.

yeah and it’s hard too.

what about an emeritus professor? i looked up emeritus and it means retired, but they’re still on the faculty website. can i still use her?

I loved this question! I chose a polisci prof who’s part of the reason i’m applyin to penn! I’ve read his books and stuffs. <- LOL I’m a nerd, I know. But you’re on CC too, so you’re one too!

Just to be on the safe side, refer to them as “Professor Blahblah” and rather choose an active faculty member. not Emeritus. My mom’s a professor emeritus, and the most research she does these days is checking out weatherforecast.com :stuck_out_tongue: It doesn’t matter whether they’re teaching courses or only at penn for research because the questions asks whether you’d like to study or do research with them.

this question isn’t new this year. and it really doesn’t have any bearing on whether or not you will work with them later. i emailed penn about this and they said they just use this to see how you would expand yourself academically. but they emphasized the importance of ‘why penn.’

basically, why penn >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> professor blurb.

if i choose an assistant professor, do they have to teach? Or can it just be their research

i really liked my answer to this one (:
i chose professor charles bernstein

No aaron56, they don’t let the professor know there’s some froshie who wants to assist :stuck_out_tongue: But if they’re available ,you can totally ask to do research with them…if they are. Basically, its just for adcoms.

Its jsut a question to show that you’re actually thinking about the real benefits of Penn, apart from the flashy name you want next to your BA or whatever after you’ve graduated.

1) This thread is from 2005. It was new that year.

2) Don’t choose a “director”, lecturer or an emeritus professor, as those people don’t do research. An assistant or associate professor is fine, though. And they don’t have to teach.

^WHOA why was this bumped up so randomly ahah
