Hello everyone, I’m Ashlie. I’m going to be in computer graphics; anyone else here?
Anyway, @BlackRose21: I’m flying in (direct flight) from Ohio and arriving at the airport around 10 or 11… kinda early. It was the cheapest flight available though.
@elec: I’m wondering the same thing; I’m thinking it might not be worth it (depending on the cost) because of a lack of time.

@ crazygirl
well I called them a couple of time and they say mines is still “under review” but I’m going to call them tomorrow cause it’s been 3 weeks since I last talked to them.But I know some info from other people who have applied.

@ashhhhlie
well I applied to that program hopefully I will get it. If you don’t mine could you post your stats?

Well, first I got waitlisted as Nanotech was already full, and then I found out that I got in a couple of days ago; I don’t think I’ll be going though, because I already have a great internship over the summer and they’re only giving me $2875 of financial aid, and that’s a tad too little for me. I have a feeling that had I applied on time, I would have gotten much more financial aid, but the past is past. So, for those of you who are going, have fun! And for those of you still waiting to hear back, good luck! :)

If you guys want me to post my stats, I’ll be happy to do so. :)

It is an expensive program, but that is a good amount of financial aid, much more than we received. Three hours of college credit, plus the 3 week academic and extra experiences are definitely valuable. However, if you have other good opportunities to consider, then that makes it a difficult decision. Hope you have a great summer, either way!

rocketblues: congrats on getting in & on your internship! would you mind posting your stats please?

@rocketblues

o wow those are pretty good stats! Your the first other person that I know that has applied to the computer graphics program everyone else applied to the nanotech., biotech. and computer science. Thanks I hope I get some info soon, and congratulations in getting into the program and the national merit. Also thanks for posting your stats.

thanks blackrose! Definitely keep us posted on any info they give you. It’d be awesome to kind of know someone going before getting there, since everyone else here is in other programs!

@ashhhhlie: How did you find out already that you were a NMSF? Are you going on your state’s past cutoff scores? I would be interested to know. Thank you!

@ashhhhlie: Or are you referring to the letter sent out that indicated you would qualify for something: commended or semifinalist, to be announced in late August or early Sept.?

I sent in all my stuff April 27, and they didn’t “receive” everything until May 6. (Wow, that seems like such a long time ago!)

Programs accepted into: Penn Biomedical Research Academy, Penn SAAST Nanotechnology

Hope this helps! (although my stats are not quite as impressive as the others haha)

@rocketblues: i think those stats are great! Your rank is awesome for such a big class of people in your grade.
@universityquest: that would be the letter sent out in… ah i think it was april? So you’re correct, i only know that i’m at least commended but will not know for sure until september. But the letter was the one that allowed me to notify two colleges of my choice that i am at least a commended student

Hey guys. I attended SAAST the summer before my sophomore year (2006) and I just wanted to say that this program is fantastic. I did Computer Programming, which is what they called Computer Science back then. There were maybe 120 of us total and most of the students were going to be juniors/seniors the following school year. You make great friends and although you do have to work it’s a lot of fun.

Someone asked what to pack…you’re only there for 3 weeks so you’ll probably do laundry once. Bring enough clothes to last you a week and a half without laundry. Bring bedding (sheets/blanket/pillow/etc, the Quad has AC), toiletries, anything you need to do your work…and maybe some nice outfits. I remember having two dances but the activities vary from year to year. A laptop can be useful and maybe speakers for chilling in the Quad - the rules were really relaxed, there’s no bedtime (you have to be in the Quad by 10/11 though) and girls are allowed in guys’ rooms.

Anyways, I’m just speaking from my experience. I’m not sure if anything has changed since 2006 (it might have).

rocketblues: thanks for posting your stats. wow, they’re really impressive! congratulations on getting into those programs!

@nan: Just curious as to how tough the grading was. Did most students choose to get a letter grade or to go pass/fail? What letter grades were common for those that chose to go that route (in the various classes, not only computer)? Your feedback would be appreciated! Thank you! Glad to know that it was an exciting and valued experience for you.

@nan: Thanks for you feedback on the program! I am wondering if I should get the gym membership. Did you manage to have time to use the athletic facilities when you were there?

I just found out today that I got accepted to nanotech. I’m so excited! I’m away form home right now, so I didn’t get the email until today. They sent it two days ago, so it was after the deposit deadline. Does anyone know how long I have to send in my deposit? because I won’t get home till tomorrow.

Well try to e-mail them your response if you feel that it will be too late by the time you get home, and congratulations. Did you get some financial aid for the program? I’m hoping to know by tomorrow.

thanks for the response. I called them today and everything turned out okay. I did get financial aid for the program. I’m feel really fortunate. I was scared that there wouldn’t be any left and I wouldn’t be able to go.

Good luck!!
