I know this is hotly contested and I also know that Philadelphia as a city has done a poor job in general of handling rising crime rates. But, I was wondering how safe (or unsafe) current students/alums/Philly residents felt on campus and in the surrounding vicinity? I've heard everything from it's no issue at all to it's a huge issue and as I consider what comes next and possibly applying to the school for grad school, I'd like to be informed.

Most of the crime at Penn (and at most colleges and universities) is student-on-student crime.

I lived around 47th and Baltimore for 12 years, and had a business on 45th and Springfield, and never experienced a single incident. (My wife lived there as well, walked around at night, and can say the same.) Could be different now, as housing values have majorly risen.

If the chants from the stands during basketball games mean anything, all the students at Princeton seem to indicate Penn is safe. "Safety School" "Safety School" etc. ;0

I am familiar with Philly. Penn isn't like Dartmouth, but for people who are comfortable in a big city it's fine. There are so many colleges in and around town. On weekends there are kids everywhere.

There have been at least 10 other threads on safety at Penn or Chicago in the past week. The answer hasn't changed. Spideygirl's version is fine.
