****penn State Admissions Chancer***

This is probably the nerdiest thing I will ever post, but here it goes.

There's lots of talk about how GPA is 2/3 of the admission decision and the SAT is 1/3. Using that and the SAT scores, I think I've figured out a way to estimate chances. For these chances you don't consider anything that's not just numbers (EC's, legacy, essay, etc). GPA is assumed to be on a 4.0 scale.

Take the middle 50% of students at UP.

GPA: 3.57-3.97
SAT: 1740-1980

Now the "average" of those students would be

GPA: (3.57 + 3.97)/2 = 3.77
SAT: (1740 + 1980)/2 = 1860

Now figure out what percent of a "perfect" applicant that would be (a perfect applicant being someone who has a 4.0/2400)

GPA %: 3.77 / 4.0 = .9425
SAT %: 1860 / 2400 = .775

Take into account how it is weighed by multiplying by 2/3 and 1/3 respectively.

GPA weighing: .9425 * .66 = .6221
SAT weighing: .775 * .33 = .2558

Add them together and you have the "score" of the average student

score = .6221 + .2558 = .8779

Again the "perfect" applicant would have the highest score possible, a 1.0

Now I will do my score as an example. I have a 3.42 GPA and a 2180 SAT.

GPA %: 3.42 / 4.0 = .855
SAT %: 2180 / 2400 = .9083

now the weighting

GPA weighting: .855 * .66 = .5643
SAT weighting: .9083 * .33 = .2997

add them together

my score = .5643 + .2997 = .864 (slightly below the average student with a .8779)

Again this is a very rough estimate, but I hope this helps some.

And yes, I am a huge dork.

Hahaha I find this pretty cute actually... given that you are a guy

Well if Penn State uses weighed GPA mine would be

(3.86/4.00)(2/3) = .644
(2200/2400)(1/3) = .306
.644 + .306 = .949

(4.00/4.00)(2/3) = .666
(1660/2400)(1/3) = .231
.666+.231 = .897

...engineering by the way.

Ha, I really like this. Good stuff.

fiN01, nerdy of not, I think this is pretty interesting. Do you have anything similar? some sort of "formula" that somehow includes EC's, ranks, etc? I mean CC is already doing a lot of predictions based on numbers but this might lessen my neuroticism.

Well I have friends at my school who got in with a 3.45 GPA, no AP's and 1700 on SAT. I also have another who has a 3.4 GPA 9 AP's and 1650 and got in, so you never know. If you have more AP's and honors, but a lower GPA, you should be fine.
