Penn State Altoona/Hazelton/Harrisburg (Smeal) Vs Rutgers (RBS) New Brunswick

Hello everyone,

I was recently accepted to the Smeal school of business 2 year transfer program which is that you do 2 years at a satellite campus and the next 2 years at university park. Additionally, I was accepted to the Rutgers School of Business in New Brunswick. I was wondering which option is better for me.

I have in state tuition at Rutgers so that would make tuition only around 25k per year whereas Penn state's is around 44k

That being said, how much of an advantage will I have going for an MBA if I am going to Penn State rather than Rutgers? I recognise that Smeal is a much better school but is it worth the money?

I also have the opportunity possibly to switch to undecided and enroll in UP, then apply for smeal while there. Again is this worth it?

I would appreciate any feedback you have to offer in making this decision a bit easier for me. Thanks!

The satellite campuses are much less demanding than the UP campus, so for you to be good at Smeal duing your 3rd and 4th year you’d have to have straight A’s during your first two years - no point in getting to Smeal at Up and getting a 2.8 that leads nowhere (and certainly not to an MBA). In addition, the schools are small (which can be a + or a -) and you’d definitively have more attention from professors and a closer-knit feel -however they’re also commuter schools so not totally.
Overall, I’d say it’s not worth the cost. If after starting at Rutgers you realize you really really want Smeal, you can start out at Rutgers and try to transfer.
However starting Undecided at UP and transfering into Smeal later on can be a good option if you want to go farther away from home. Still I’m not sure it’s worth the cost.

How is this possible ? You were accepted to Rutgers main campus but didn’t get accepted to PSU main. They are peer schools. Did you apply really late ?

I also have to agree with the poster above. You are doing injustice to Rutgers main by comparing it to a PSU branch campus. Rutgers is in-state too, so its an obvious choice…

Im not too sure how it happened tbh, I was a bit bummed  but regardless, thanks alot for your replies. I sincerely appreciate it. At the moment I am leaning towards Rutgers as it seems the most plausible, however if anyone else feels I should act differently or would like to further stress Rutgers, please let me know. Thanks!

Don’t see why the difference between Rutgers and Penn State would be worth $78,000. I realize that many NJ residents want to go anywhere but Rutgers, but if you want to go into business, you need to consider the dollars and cents of this kind of decision.
