It’s still early in the audition season, but my D really likes Penn State. She applied to all of the Top ~15 MT programs (and several others), and passed about 75% of the pre-screens, but not Penn State’s. However, she was accepted into their BA, Theatre Studies program. Of course, we know that this program is primarily for Directors, Dramaturgs, Playwrights, etc…, but question for the group – if it comes down to it, and you want to be a ‘performer,’ is it better to 1) Accept a pure MT BFA option at a ‘lesser’ program, or 2) Pursue the BA option at a greater program (like Penn State) and take the performing options as they come, knowing the BFA’s will always have first crack? Of course, it’s more about being successful ‘no matter where you go’ and ‘being comfortable’ with your choice, but just wanted some perspective from folks. Thanks
For undergrad and given the choice of majors, I’m inclined to encourage her to go where she won’t incur a lot of debt. Even talented and successful people don’t make a career in musical theatre, so income after graduation could be minimal for a few years. She also has to look at which programs she’s likely to get the most stage time. It could be juniors and seniors might also have priority.
When did your dd hear? Mine did change her application to BA Theatre after not passing the MT prescreen (she has since decided that she prefers a BA wherever she goes). Penn State is her first choice, and their website said notification by Jan 31… do they really mean all decisions released tomorrow? Most schools seem to do rolling for non-audition programs!
She was admitted to the BA program. Still in the throes of BFA auditioning though. Just got back from Chicago Unfieds where she had 13 auditions. Still a long way to go. If you haven’t heard back from PSU, it should come any day. Rolling.
