Does anyone have any experience with or opinions of the Penn State BArch program? We know that it was fairly highly ranked (approx 10?), the building is gorgeous, and it's got a great location right next to the Creamery for late night ice cream. Anything else anyone can add?

It's a limited enrollment program with an expected incoming class of 75 and is highly competititive. They do not require a portfolio for admissions. My daughter was excepted for Fall 2007. They also sent her information about special housing for arch students. We went to their summer open house and were impressed with the faculty. We had a good feeling overall. They have a mandatory program in Rome for fourth year students. It is a well respected program. It was her third choice, but she also got into her top choice.

Niece is a freshman in the BArch program but is transferring to Arch. Engineering because she says the BArch program is too focused on art. She says she prefers the more scientific/mechanical aspect of Architecture than the "artsy" stuff.

what are their admission requirements? i mean if they don't request a portfolio ?

High GPA and test scores. Much higher that what you need to get into University Park. The admissions officier told us it's as competitive as their BS/MD program at Hershey. If you are on the borderline, they will ask you to submit a portfolio.
