"You have been carefully selected to apply for the prestigious Penn State Bunton Waller Fellowship. The details are in the attached letter. Please read carefully. You will also be receiving the same information by mail but due to time restraints I wanted to get the information out to you immediately. If you have any questions or trouble opening the attachments please feel free to contact me."

Approximately how many students are selected to apply for this fellowship?

I’ve heard of this fellowship, actually–very prestigious. Only 18-25 people are chosen to apply yearly for 4 spots, or at least from what I hear. This scholarship is reserved for people who have the prerequisites of good grades, good SATs, and generally good academic achievement, along with a well-rounded background including exceptional ECs. Congrats, and Good luck.

quick google search showed it is a minority full-tuition room and board scholarship. So not as competitive as a campus-wide one, but I would imagine many students with similar stats as you are receiving this letter. It also says you have to live in Pennypacker hall your freshmen year in order to receive this.

Well they give the fellowship to a certain amount of kids in each college. It’s a great fellowship (I personally didn’t get it when I came in) and it covers pretty much all of your schooling. I would make sure I apply for it if I were you as they don’t send that letter out to every student ;). (For instance coming in I didn’t even know about the fellowship until after I got to college.)

Yeah my friend got it. Her GPA is only roughly a 3.9, and SATs 1500/2400.
So I don’t think you have to be THAT bright to get it.
Definitely apply though, I know I would.

I actually think it also is a minority scholarship. It also depends on what college you’re in as they allot so many to each college.
HOWEVER, I would say with this scholarship it is kind of luck of the draw mixed with stats (Just like admissions ;)), so your friend who got it is fortunate to get it as minorities with higher stats might not have gotten it.

I also wanted to see if I could get it after coming in and you cant :(.

Just a quick FYI to the parents of all candidates for full ride scholarships from the parent of such a student: Come tax time, if you plan to continue to claim your student as a dependent on your federal return, you must add the room and board portion of the scholarship to your gross income for the year. The state of Pennsylvania does not count any part of the scholarship as taxable, but Uncle Sam defines anything beyond tuition and certain fees as extra taxable income. Please consult your tax advisor and plan accordingly.

I received the same letter this year. APplication process closes March 9, 2011.
Did you get the fellowship last year. I wonder how many students get the letter to apply and how many students get selected.

GPA: 4.31 weighted for honors and AP classes. Top 5% of graduating class,
Lots of community service awards (Presidential Youth Service Award, NOAA Youth Service Award)…SAT scores just OK 1150/1600 1740/2400 writing 11/12.

From the letter it appears that each school has a certain number of fellowships they award. My letter came from the Division of Undergraduate Studies (Undeclared Major), and they said they had TWO fellowships to award.

I really want to go to Penn State, but as an out-of-state student will not be able to afford it unless I get that Fellowship.

I am also a finalist for Green Mountain’s Make a Difference full tuition/room/board scholarship as well as a finalist in the Roanoke College Scholars program which also gives
3 full tuition/room/board scholarships and 12 full tuition scholarship.

I am hoping I get one of the three scholarships. or otherwise I will have to go to my local state college, which is affordable.

I got this fellowship, but i am a Graduate student, I also received a 15k yearly stipend. I had low GRE scores, 3.0 GPA, BUT I HAD A GREAT PORTFOLIO, and I am hispanic, from El Salvador.

I am Fellow now too. Got accepted this year and was offered it from the smeal college of business. GPA- 3.7 (unweighted) ACT- 31 comp (35M,29W,31CR,30Sci) SAT 1960 (760M,640CR,560W). Great EC’s captain of tennis team, bowling team and drumline, and I also had a really solid amount of volunteer service
