Hi, I have a 3.0 weighted gpa( our school only does weighted), 4 AP, 1 Honor, 1760 on SAT,
Extracurricular: Muay Thai, Ping Pong, Green Teen Environmental Volunteer, Family Business Help, btw im out of state.(NY)

You’ll probably only be admitted to a branch campus at best.

more chances please. bump. because on the collegeboard site it tells me 11 percent of incoming freshmen has a 3.0 gpa and my sat(1760) falls in the criteria around the above 50percent

Hey plshelpwcollege, I believe that you do have a chance with Penn State. Definitely with their branch schools? They do have a 2 + 2 program where you can transfer to the main campus your junior year and its cheaper to go to a branch. However, you do have a chance. May I ask what major you are looking at? :)

Do you think I have a chance at the main campus? My major is declared undecided, exploratory.

Undecided usually tends to help boost up your chances.

bump

bump

You do have a chance except your gpa is a bit low.

According to the bubble chart, you’d be starting at a branch campus. In order to have a shot at University Park with a 3.0 weighted GPA, you’d need 2300 on your SAT… The 11% who got admitted with these stats were either legacies or recruited athletes, as are most students in the bottom 25% of the stats.

Penn state does not require a 2300 SAT. Their average for University Park is between 1760 and 2000.

According to their website your SAT is fine but your GPA is simply too low for University Park.

@pennplease2015: I’m referring to the chart given to admission and guidance counselors, dubbed the “bubblechart”. It correlates GPA and SAT score for a rough indication of a student’s odds at admission. This chart indicates that a student with a 3.0 weighted has zero chance of admission unless hitting a 2300 (and in that case there should be other indicators such as rigorous curriculum with high AP scores, prep school with strong grade deflation, etc.)
OP is likely to be offered a branch campus. In order to maximize the odds, OP should not ask for University Park but rather a more desirable branch campus such as Erie or Altoona, as well as a less desirable branch campus such as Greater Allegheny or Abington. With the 2+2, OP would be sure to spend his/her junior and senior year in college at University Park.
