@Oceanisle That is old news. The first line of the "First-time, first-year (freshman) says, "Provide the number of degree-seeking, first-time, first-year students who applied, were admitted, and enrolled (full- or part-time) in Fall 2018. "
That is last year’s data and does not include the impact of both Common App and EA.
I have - anecdotally - heard that applications were up 26,000 over the prior year as well as that applications were over 100k. I will be interested to see which it is!
It will definitely be interesting to see the most recent numbers. I did want to post this for those CC members who don’t know to look this data up but might find it interesting.
I recently attended a college Financial Aid presentation at S20’s school and there were some parents of sophomores in attendance. I was talking with a group of them afterward about merit aid if you can target schools where your student is above the 75 percentile, and none of them had ever heard of a Common Data Set.
With that said, by nature of the fact that folks are here on CC to begin with, most of them probably do know they can access this data.
@OceanIsle i agree that the common data set is valuable. However, when looking at middle 50 GPA and SAT/ACT scores, they are available on the admissions page - which is much easier to find.
Many colleges, you can just use “middle 50” and the name of the college for that data.
Ironically, the middle 50 is not available in the CDS. Instead, if breaks out - by range - what percentage of student were in that range. For example:
Students in top 10% of class: 11%
Students in top 25% of class: 76%.
— where is the middle 50 of that data? You can’t find it.
Also, in the CDS that you linked, Penn State did not report GPA’s. They have an asterisk;
Due to the variance in high school GPA ranges, this data is not available.
Which really isn’t helpful ! I know they re-calculate GPA with their own weighting, but it would be helpful to know that! At least on the Admissions page, they give you something. (Middle for for UP is 3.55-3.97).
So, while I agree that CDS can be helpful, depending on the school, they may - or may not - report the data at all or in a way that is useful.
We are all interested in it this year though. I’ve heard many different numbers about total applications and will be interested to see what is actually reported. I think @jlhpsu heard mid-November?
@lucyvanpelt , Thank you so much for that info about the website! With no other options, I was calculating the middle 50 in a completely unreliable way by dividing the 25 and 75 percentiles to get a rough number and obviously it’s flawed to say the least.
I’m going to head straight to the PSU website to fulfill my “data nerd” curiosity as I not-so-patiently await the PSU admissions decision for S20.
Thanks again!
@OceanIsle there are other things that come into play… send me a DM and we can talk!
Penn State 2019-2020 CDS should be released late November/early December as per the Office of Planning, Assessment and Institutional Research.
I did hear November, but I heard it from @STEM2017 We are all a good team here!
November is almost gone. I’ll be interested to see the updated data. S20 still has his app “under review.” ?
