Penn State Computer Science

Hey everyone! I was recently offered admission into the College of Engineering at Penn State - University Park with the intended major of computer science and have accepted. I am really passionate about programming and I am sure that I would like to pursue computer science. However, I have always been mediocre at math and the required classes at Penn State are making me nervous because when I visited I heard they are relatively hard. I was accepted into a few other schools as a computer science major, but I really had my heart set on PSU. Does anyone have any info on the cedibility of Penn State’s computer science program? Is the program at PSU more worth it than Rutgers NB, Indiana, UMass, etc, even though I will have to work very hard? I’ve heard Penn State has an almost unbeatable alumni network, which really influenced my decision.

It sounds like it’s too late, but the good news is that the worst case is you struggle through a few math classes. Rutgers is comparable and UMass (assuming Amherst) is generally regarded as better on prestige/reputation, but the differences are in the end negligible. PSU CS is plenty solid. What math classes are you exactly worried about? I see up to Calc 2, Linear Algebra, and Statistics, which all are standard and none incredibly challenging. You may not do the best in them, but you should be just fine.

Be happy about PSU and take it one math class at a time!

@PengsPhils Thank you! That calms my nerves a little bit. Yes, it was the Calc 2 and Linear Algebra that were making me nervous. I was thinking that they weren’t standard classes and were harder math classes, but I am now thinking that with a little extra time I will be absolutely fine.

Just make sure you get good professors for math 140/141 as this can make a world of difference
