Penn State DISCUSSION THREAD Fall 2022 Admission

I am not sure about corrections on the Common App but from what I have read on this thread EC, LOR, and the essays really don’t matter for PSU. If that is true, he will be fine. Good luck :four_leaf_clover:

Thank you both. He is emailing now. Also, where exactly was the TO button?

Left column of menus. Something like “Change your testing option” button. My son’s disappeared this evening. Good luck!

That would still be Smeal. Anything in the college of business is Smeal.

See @lucy_van_pelt response. She got it exactly right.

There are no Smeal direct admits by the way. Even if accepted as a freshman, the student is pre-major. They aren’t actually “IN” Smeal until they complete entry to major requirements which include classes and GPA requirements. This is why a student can also get into Smeal via an undecided major (DUS (the college) - not Smeal undecided). They can take the exact same entry to major requirements and get in the same exact time as the pre-major students do.

The applicants I’m comparing are from the same high school, same demographic, significantly lower academic achievement, submitted test optional. Different major, but from what I’ve learned in this group, being admitted as a business major at PSU is not an advantage because they don’t offer direct admit to Freshmen at the business school. So, i don’t know why it would be more competitive. From this, I can surmise that applying TO would have been to my daughter’s advantage, as her scores were the weakest component of her application.

She checked off that she would consider summer start because she would consider it as a last resort. I wonder if PSU will offer online summer start again this year. Although, that still wouldn’t solve the issue of who is going to pay for it.

I don’t understand your comment about Smeal. Applying to Smeal IS more competitive than applying most other majors at Penn State. There are more applicants and those applicants likely have higher stats on average, especially in areas like math.

I just got accepted. I can confirm that my TO button disappeared around 7pm and I logged in at 12am to check my decision and I was admitted.

My daughter got 2+2 but doesn’t need any more time to “get there”. She graduated high school in 3 years with her AA :scroll: from the community college and a 3.958 UW GPA.

I feel like she is punished for coming from a small school and having big dreams.

My daughter got the same and also has her AA degree, a 3.958 UW GPA and did high school in 3 years

OOS TX
Psych
2+2 Harrisburg
Yep…perplexing - same stats as some admitted to UP.
But she’s already in ASU, Houston, and, Arkansas (which seems to be her to choice)

Similar here. 3.98UW with good rigor, great ECs etc.

Got an invitation to apply to Altoona honors “only 5% of our students are invited” Like then why not UP? Yes she’s bitter lol

Update: my son who forgot :woman_facepalming:t2::woman_facepalming:t2::woman_facepalming:t2: to put National Honor Society on his application got ACCEPTED to University Park Fall ‘22 on 12/14. I can confirm that the TO button was not available on his portal at about 8 last night. This thread has been extremely insightful. Thanks everyone. Good luck :four_leaf_clover: to all still waiting. He is my second to go through this grueling process. Not for the faint of heart.

TO
In-State
4.0 UW GPA
Intended major Political Science
Tons of EC and Leadership
Applied on 9/25/21

Do you think size of high school matters? We are from a small school.

I don’t think so. I go to a small little-known high school and got accepted to UP.

Would she/you consider calling/emailing the AO and ask to reconsider for DUS/Undecided? It takes a few weeks but has happened in the past. Her stats should get her into DUS- UP for fall. And she can take same entry to major requirements and get into Smeal after completing those requirements (along with a minimum GPA). Usually at spring sophomore year. something to think about…

Interesting because she couldn’t have any better stats coming from our school. I mean she did high school in 3 years along with completing her AA degree and with a 3.958 UW GPA (we do not weight GPA) I kinda think, what else do you want from her? But when I say small school I mean we graduate 58 in this year’s class. So we are really small.

And I agree…there isn’t anything more my daughter could have done to get into UP. When you graduate in 3 years while completing your AA degree and others get in with a 3.5 it is frustrating.
