Penn State DISCUSSION THREAD Fall 2022 Admission

Instate provost award is an amazing deal.

We are weighing our options - seeing what other acceptances she receives, and additional scholarships and aid that she will get instate.

I think its difficult to justify 17k more a year (x4) than our instate schools.

currently in the process…most of her credits are not listed in the transfer portal as I would assume not many from our part of Minnesota (about an hour east of Fargo) choose to go to Penn State

In-State tuition plus room and board comes to be about 30k or a little over. Penn State’s in-state tuition is still one of the highest in-state tuition of any public school in PA…or the country…because it’s not a state school. It’s state-related. (We are in the top 10 highest in-state tuition in the country).
The vast bulk of Penn State’s budget is from tuition and donations. Very little state funding. The discount in-state students do get is because of state taxes paid (the same way traditional “state schools” have lower tuition for in-state students but private colleges do not) because they do get some state money. Still, true state schools in PA have tuition that is more than half of what Penn State is.
I know the sticker shock can be, well…shocking! I was just giving you a little background that in state students are already paying way more than typical in state students and few would feel they are getting a “deal”.

All of that said…Congratulations on the Provost Award! It’s not commonly given and shows Penn State really wants your child to attend. Penn State is a great school. Awesome college town. Quintessential college town experience. But - as with all college - it’s not cheap!

My daughter just received word that she was waitlisted for the main campus business school. Does anyone know what the waitlist acceptance rate typically is?

How was she notified? On the portal, email or letter in mail? Did they provide timeframe as to when she would find out if she has been accepted?

She checked her portal and the decision was there (no email). They say she’ll receive a decision as soon as possible, and no later than May 15. Now we’re wondering if it’s worth waiting or if she should ask for reconsideration to DUS :woman_shrugging:t4:

No harm to ask for reconsideration for DUS. Read above and it is explained what DUS vs. Smeal PMAJ (pre-major) means …

I do not think you can be reconsidered for another program once you are on the waitlist? But let’s see what happens when someone calls and reports back.

My D changed her application from BS to DUS and they accepted her the next day. Give it a shot if she wants to go.

i applied in the first week of dec to penn state and it’s nearly 2 months now and yet they haven’t viewed my supporting materials and marked them as complete for review. When I wrote a mail to them they said, once they verify supporting materials the checklist will update but it’s already been 2 months plus I applied rolling and other schools that I applied to are starting to give decisions too. Can someone help on what I should do?

Here’s what we learned. When my daughter received her decision, she clicked the button ‘Join Waitlist’. When I called the admission office, they said because she joined the waitlist, she can’t ask for reconsideration until the waitlist decision is released :disappointed:. So…. the wait continues. If she hadn’t joined the waitlist, I believe she could have asked for reconsideration.

Ahhh, that’s what I thought. There are usually three ways off the waitlist – you say No thank you and discard all things PennState as a choice, you say No thank you to UP, Give me my campus offer and see if you want to accept that, or you wait until May and hope you are in line for a UP college that develops an opening.

Nobody knows how many people get off the waitlist, because that would depend on what colleges have a lower than expected yield. And it’s too early to know that. It seems that the offers from early admission must have exceeded expectations, and filled everything up early, hence a waitlist? It’s all so mysterious

What are some of the more popular leap prides for summer session? Which ones tend to fill up quickly?

If you applied “rolling” the chance is there that they have not started reviewing your materials yet because at Penn State, Rolling is the last in line for consideration. First is EA, then “Priority” or regular decision and THEN Rolling. At least if you applied via the common app. To qualify for EA decision you would have had to have all materials in by Nov 1, For Priority Nov 30. Anything after Nov 30 is Rolling and decisions will come after January 31st, regardless of when you applied.

Is there a way to find out if you are RD or rolling? My daughter had an issue with her application. She got everything submitted, we went on vacation out of the country (without her laptop) and found out when she got back some things didn’t get uploaded somehow. I’m wondering if that pushed her to rolling and if there’s a way to find out on the portal other than contacting an AO?

Got Smeal(2+2) today. Glad the decision finally came. Being OOS, this will not be an option. Probably pick one of the other direct admits to business schools.

Has anyone noticed if decisions are being posted on portal throughout the day, or only shortly after midnight? We are approaching January 31, and that is the published decision date for those that applied after EA.

Got an eerie email about ‘Financial Aid Resources’ from ‘Penn State Erie’ and knew it was ‘2+2’ before checking the portal. They had never emailed before.

Accepted to alternate campus today, dissapointed.

Do you know if they have a separate Smeal waitlist (vs UP waitlist)? If so, do you know the admissions stats? I’m able to find stats for all of Penn State but not specifically Smeal.
