Penn State DISCUSSION THREAD Fall 2022 Admission

As a mother of college kids, high schoolers and middle school kids I have done a lot of traveling for sports. The highlight for those middle schoolers is staying in a hotel with their friends, maybe even more so then whatever game their going to play that weekend. They love the freedom of running around and having fun. I’m sorry it was disruptive and I hope it doesn’t ruin your visit. Just remember these times go by so quickly so enjoy as best you can. Congrats on Penn State!

I’m sorry you had a bad experience at the hotel with middle and high school students, but this has nothing whatsoever to do with Penn State or its students so it shouldn’t sway your decision one way or the other regarding the school itself.

I know it doesn’t. We just had a really rough night. After the tour and sessions today my son finally told us that he has decided on Penn State. I’m very excited for him though I wasn’t surprised. The dean at Smeal said they had 17000 applications and admitted 800. That stat was staggering.

I get that kids want to have fun. I’m not against that. I do think that it is absolutely unacceptable to allow children to run around yelling in the halls and slamming doors at 12:30 in the morning. I’m a paying guest too and kids should learn to behave with respect in public. How can they learn that when the parents are treating the hotel like a frat house? And let me make it clear that I absolutely blame the parents, not the kids or the hotel. We ended up cutting our visit short and coming home today because of it. When we spoke to the gentleman at the desk this morning he told us frankly that he couldn’t believe the sh** show he walked in on at 11:30 last night when his shift started. He didn’t blame us for leaving and said that tonight was likely to be worse. At least they comped our night and didn’t penalize us for leaving early. It was just disappointing because we were really looking forward to seeing as much of the town and campus as we could.

Wow sounds way worse than I have experienced with my kids. I’m sorry you cut your visit short and hope that doesn’t impact your child’s decision on Penn State. Good luck

Trying to find more information on Smeal numbers. Are there 800 incoming students?

From what the dean said during his talk, he said that 800 were accepted. I’m not sure if that is the number they expect will accept their offer or if that’s how many offers they sent out. He just said that they received 17,000 applications for Smeal and accepted 800 of those. I guess you’ll also have to figure the undecideds who will make the requirements to get in (most of the undecided students on our tour said they were interested in business). You also have to add in the 2+2 students that will start at a branch campus and finish at UP. That will also add to the numbers in Smeal. But yes, my understanding from what he told us was that they accepted 800 students. I just found that incredible. I even had to check with my husband to make sure that I heard him correctly. Part of me still wonders if he misspoke, but that is what my husband and I both heard. During the general talk from admissions they told us that they received more applications this year than ever before.

I keep looking online but can’t find enrollment numbers anywhere.

I feel like those numbers can’t be correct. Perhaps they received 17000 for a class of 800- but then they would have to accept a lot more than 800 to accomplish that. I’m just super curious now.

Not sure if it includes the students admitted to smeal ‘2+2’.

That would make sense. In the Accepted Students presentation they said there were over 94,000 applications for an incoming freshman class of about 8,500 students so they framed it that way. They didn’t mention how many were accepted.

Wow! Thanks for this. I was doubting what I heard

Only 300? I thought Smeal has 5600 students?

I can’t find enrollment information for the schools which is bizarre to me

That can not be correct.

Hi jlhpsu, Do you know how any computer science students join the Freshman class every year? Particularly the UP campus?

I don’t disagree that UMD is limited in their downtown area, but the campus is fabulous. If you’ve never been, it’s prob not fair to put that out there.
