Penn State Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

Schreyer is one of the top (top10 or top5) honors colleges in the country. It’s highly selective hence the long essays, which are a key component in the decision.

My DD came home and said her classmate showed her his portal and he has been accepted (Engineering major). So it’s starting guys!! My DD’s portal however doesn’t have any updates.

But as the moderator has disclosed many times…we should hear by Dec 24th. So don’t panic!

Do you know what their stats were? SAT/GPA? My son applied to Engineering… UGH… now the stress begins!

My Son engineering too. The wait is on…cautiously optimistic with great stats and legacy.

@jimdlt1 @j9yank honestly, my best advice is to to forget about it. don’t be that monkey on crack. if you want to, stalk usps informed delivery for a packet with the sign… which will be a few days after the portal is updated. So much more fun to open a letter together than check a portal.

If they truly are high stats, they should be fine.

exactly! No panic is needed. The date of admission has zero to do with an applicant’s overall admissibility AND there is nothing that benefits anyone by being accepted earlier (except, of course, peace of mind).

It used to be that housing preference was done in order by the date you paid your housing deposit and committed to Penn State. So those who committed earlier were more likely to get their choice in housing. In that case, then, it made sense why people were panicking and stressing about admission. But now, the date of admission does nothing. Housing preference is done in the same way admissions are…which is to say, randomly.

I feel for everyone every year, because I know I was a BASKET CASE almost 10 years ago when my oldest daughter was applying. I stalked this board. I did research on statistics, trends etc… It was way overkill and people here told me to chill out. I did not. Not until she got her acceptance. She applied August 1 and heard January 26 (There was no EA back then). It was a very long wait. But you know what? I’ve had two more kids go to Penn State since and it got easier. All of that craziness in the beginning did me no favors. But it did help me relate to those here who worry. I get it. But believe me when I tell you - and everyone - that the worry didn’t make it more or less likely she’d get in. It just drove me crazy lol.

So enjoy this ride and try as you might, don’t rush this last year with them. I have two out of college now and two in college and it all goes by so, so, so fast

He should check thzt it states (UP) v , say Behrend, bc typically kids who heard that early were admitted to a branch campus. That being said, it may well be the case Admissions, with their new director, has beocme more efficient.

Schreyer Honors College is extremely competitive and extremely highly regarded. The admission criteria are not based on GPA and test scores, but more on the essays and the interviews. Of course, GPA matters but it’s not the most important thing.

If your son is interested in a top honors program, then I would suggest he spend time on the essays.
Make sure he looks at the requirements for being in the honors college. It adds requirements and responsibilities, but also enriches learning. It’s a balance and a student must be ready to take on the challenge of those added responsibilities.

Nice. Thats early. Would you happen to know if it is In state or OOS and which branch (ie UP or a branch campus). Thanks

We are OOS, so I’m sure he wanted UP but I can’t confirm. I do find it strange that no one else on this thread or on Reddit has said anything about decisions….and just that one classmate of my DD.

He showed her his portal but she wasn’t digging around to see which campus!

With the highly selective schools, if you look at the top right quadrant of GPA/Score, it appears totally random who gets in or who doesn’t.

Not so with Penn State. At least according to Naviance for my kid’s HS, if your kid is high stat, they will get into Penn State. Period.

There is a change to my DDs portal, this morning. She applied mid Oct and her portal has stated thank you, we have all the info needed, it had check boxes next to application and SRAR, etc. Today all of that is gone and ther is a message that says. “ We have received and are processing your application. Please check back tomorrow to view your application status and next steps.”

Under “application tools” on the left, the submit test scores button is gone and oddly under SRAR it says “not required”. I can’t recall what it says normally. So, something is happening….she is not a high stats kid so this could be a branch campus situation.

Same here. To be honest, I suspect it’s showing up for all submitted and complete applications. But that’s just a guess.
