Penn State Financial Aid Questions

I was accepted to PSU for biochemistry and molecular biology. I want to be excited about this, but I am concerned about financial aid. I applied to SHC and the Millennium Scholars Program. I also applied to the general scholarships for the Eberly College of Science. Can anyone comment on the selectivity of these scholarships. Although I know the stats for MSP and SHC, I am trying to figure out the likelihood of a good financial aid offer without gaining acceptance to either program.

Please let me know your thoughts!

Do you know the amount that is usually awarded for these scholarships?

Are you a state resident, Tennis34? Penn State doesn’t offer much aid to out of state residents. We’re in NY and here PA is known for having expensive public schools and not offering much aid. Have you run their Net Price Calculator to get an estimate of costs?

@Yankeefan20, I understand that you need money to pay for school when you transfer. You’ll get better help if you create a thread with your specific information (major, budget, stats) instead of asking random questions on other student’s threads.

A quick Google search would tell you the grants OP is talking about are for freshmen, not transfers. Penn State costs $50k/year. They do have a ~$6k/year grant that NJ residents can apply for, but even if you got it that and your Pell Grant wouldn’t cover the $15k room and board. And you’d still have a ~$36k/year gap for tuition.

If you want help finding some affordable options, please create your own thread. There are plenty of people on this site who can help you.

I am in state. Things are looking dismal in terms of financial aid. I have high stats for PSU (on average) so I was hoping for a decent amount of merit aid. I guess my question is if they give decent aid through Eberly.

Penn State gives very little merit or need-based aid to instate or out-of-state students. Students accepted to Schreyer get $5000 a year. Most students get no institutional aid.

That is really sad.

Does the state of PA give out any need-based grants to some in-state students?

Yes, there are PHEAA grants for in-state students who meet need-based criteria. Maximum PHEAA grant is around $4000/year.

Yeah but it is pretty small
