Penn State Financial Aid

Hey, does anyone know when financial aid for penn state comes out? Nobody has heard anything yet, correct?

Also, does it come out in batches or are most released on the same day for already admitted students?

Early March according to https://admissions.psu.edu/costs-aid/student-aid/

Ok thanks!

Are you an instate applicant?

No I’m out of state

Then don’t expect any financial aid, except for the 5.5K federal loans. That means you need to talk RIGHT NOW with your parents to see whether they have 40-42K*4 in savings for you, or can afford that amount every year from their income and savings combined. If they can’t, PSU is not affordable : do you have other universities you like and can afford?

Wait Penn State doesn’t give financial aid to out of state students? I find that hard to believe. I really hope it’s not true since I do really like the university:(

@myos1634 you are so right

You can run the net price calculator and see what it tells you. https://cce.ais.psu.edu/legacy-college-cost-web/netPricePageOne.xhtml Most likely it will show a large amount of Parent Plus loans, not aid.

In-state students are often state(-related) schools’ first priority financially.

Even instate $0 EFC students usually get no institutional aid from PSU. The net price calculator for a $0 EFC instate student shows only Pell and state grants, leaving a balance of over $20,000.

Wow that sucks, but thanks guys! (Hopefully I’ll have a little luck with financial aid lol)

Depending on your stats and whether you applied to Schreyer, you could also get lucky with merit. They don’t give much of it on average but some students get a pretty good deal. I’m in-state, though, so it probably wouldn’t be affordable for me if I got the same amount of merit as an OOS student, but that’s each individual family’s decision.

Hopefully! We’ll just have to wait and see. I’ve gotten some pretty decent pagckages from other schools, so it wouldn’t be the end of the world if penn didn’t, but it certainly would be great if they did you know? I’m not sure if I applied to schreyer (I’m not sure ik what that is lol)

^Schreyer is the Honors College. If you didn’t apply, you won’t get any merit aid, just federal aid (the Stafford federal loans).

Oh ok, well thanks for the help!!

@MYOS1634 I too thought that the only merit aid PSU offered was to Schreyer students. But in a very pleasant surprise my daughter (who did not apply to Schreyer) received a letter today offering her a Provost Award in the amount of $4000 annually so $16k total.

@xyb678 Hi, please don’t give up so quickly on PSU. I’ve been told for the past few years PSU gives NO money to OOS students (or anyone), so expect nothing. My daughter is accepted for Fall 2018 and received one scholarship already and is applying to two more in the College she was accepted in. She is not in Schreyers (applied, but not counting on it). Penn State has lots of scholarships for first year students in all different colleges, just have to go out and look for them. They may not add up to a nice merit package from another school, but if this is the school for you, do a little more research before you count it out. BTW- If you applied to Schreyers, acceptance is based on essays and other factors, not GPA and SAT scores. It’s very competitive, and gives the student $5k year scholarship.

Today my d also received the Provost Award letter and she did not apply for honors. Feeling thankful!

@simple0920 and @adlgel do you mind sharing your student’s stats that received the Provost Award? Also, what major? Have you already filled out Fafsa? We just completed ours yesterday, and are still holding out hope for a little something as far as merit goes!
