Penn state for graphic design? (transfer student. advice needed!)

Hey!
I'm currently attending the fashion institute of technology majoring in communication design in nyc and I'm thinking about transferring to penn state next fall. I applied and was accepted but I'm wondering if leaving is a good option. They accepted all of my credits. I have mixed feelings about my current school because its not at all your average college experience and some days I absolutely hate it and some days I am fine with it. Its mostly an all girls school and as much as I love the city I think I should transfer to a more 'normal' college. I visited the school and its beautiful but I don't know if its worth it because of how expensive it is (and i'm currently at a suny school and its very cheap). I'm still waiting on financial aid.
I also can't get a feel for how the graphic design program really is. I want to be challenged and not feel like it all comes easy. I don't want to waste my time and money.
so any comments about the school or transferring in general would be so helpful!

My DD has been accepted to the pre-design college for graphic design for this coming Fall. Everyone we have spoken with is that it is not an easy major and it is very time consuming. It seems like they are looking for people who have ideas and know how to express that idea in a media form. Have you submitted your poster and been accepted to the program? If you want to know exactly what the program is about I would schedule a meeting with the dept (we did and learned alot plus we attended the spend a summer day last year).

Thanks for responding, and yeah I’ve been accepted into the program for fall 2013. Is Penn State your daughters first choice? I’ll be a transfer student though. I do like hearing its hard because currently the program I’m in at FIT is pretty difficult but I feel as though I’ve learned a lot. But as for the school itself I’m not crazy about it which is why I’m really interested in Penn State. I definitely want to visit the department on a day that they are actually open since I visited over a weekend.

Save your money. Stay at SUNY. Penn State is pretty expensive. Will you have to take loans ?

XtremePower, There is often more to consider than bottom line in terms of cost, especially when one is considering specific programs.

We are in state so tuition will be less than oos. But yes it is expensive - but so was most of the other colleges that had her major. I actually made her go and visit cuz she had no interest because she thought it was too big for her. She was thinking more of an urban enviornment for her college. We visited Drexel, Syracuse, Temple and SVA. She loved the campus and she had brought her camera with her and took a ton of pictures. We met with the dept privately and he explained the program and took us on a tour of the facilities. She also spoke with the current students. What is cool is that its a great campus which you can make small - she is looking to live in the Art & Arch SLO so she will be with people with similar interests. It seems to offer the most of what she was looking for.

Sorry I didn’t know you were going to pay OP’s loans…

No, but I am still paying one of my son’s loans. I also helped pay off my husband’s loans. Each was an investment that was well worth it in the end.

So I got my financial aid reward and it comes to about 15,545 with loans included. I’m still trying to decide if its worth it considering I’m going into graphic design and I’m not sure how I’ll do coming out of school. But I really want to go because I know I can learn so much, so maybe that can factor in?

$15545.

SO, can you pay the rest (around 23k per year) without taking parent plus or other private loans ? Only YOU can evaluate whether the cost difference is worth the education difference.

No, I’d have to take out more loans to pay it off. Which I guess is just asking for trouble.

Approximately how much debt will you be in after you complete your undergrad at Penn State compared to SUNY ? Is it a reasonable amount ?

Probably around 70 grand worth of debt.

I’m just trying to convince myself that I can go but in reality I don’t think I can afford it unfortunately. I was hoping for more aid.

Yes UP is expensive and doesn’t give much aid. DD didn’t get any besides the standard 5500 Federal loan. We luckly started saving when she was born cuz we would never be able to afford it.
