Penn State, FSU, or Syracuse?

Can MT students study abroad or just acting kids?

Both were accepted for the Fall semester. Hopefully it stays this way. I know they are starting to frown upon the MT kids going cause they will be missing out on voice and dance. However, all the students seem to supplement with privates for both while in London. My D really wants to go so hoping they will continue to take MT students.

Just as PSU has PA Stage, Syracuse has Syracuse Stage, a professional LORT affiliation. It also has an excellent reputation and opportunity for the students.

Lulu 63, we noticed that some better known professionals had a history of working with Syracuse Stage, but not so much lately. Do you know if this is just a trend or by design within the company? Not saying that the quality changes, we just noticed the difference.

Thanks for all of your helpful info!

PSU has a small MT class size (12ish) and all go to Showcase. Can anyone speak of the class size and dance training at these schools?

As noted in a post in another thread, based on my survey of 1,216 online bios from 48 Broadway, off-Broadway, and National Tour shows in which 466 actors reported their schools:

6 = Florida State 16

11 = Penn State 10

11 = Syracuse 10

All three schools do very well in producing working MT actors. Of course, these numbers do not mean a whole lot and come with many caveats, as noted in post #146 of this thread:

Argh! EmsDad, the link to that thread is broken. Can you give me a hint as to which thread it’s in so I can find it? I am very interested in seeing the other stats. Thanks! (I know it has the word “attend” in it…)

@monkey13: Sorry about that, here is the correct link - the post is #146 (page 10):

All are wonderful choices! Judging by my username…you can probably guess where I went. Just as a brief statement on why I loved my experience and what PSU has to offer:

class size is so small and the student vs full time faculty ratio is very small. You get SO much personal attention…these teachers become your mentors. I am still VERY close with them. They push you to your limits, but will catch you if you fall. Very nuturing environment.

PSU has a very even balance of singing, dancing, and acting classes, as well as combining those forces in studio classes. The acting classes are taught by the MFA Acting professors—SUCH a treat. They are brilliant.

The campus is AMAZING. My mom is there this weekend visiting my brother (he’s a senior…we became a total PSU obsessed family!!) and I’m insanely jealous. They call it “Happy Valley” for a reason. Everything is within walking distance, the town is adorable and full of life, mom and pop shops and great restaurants, big collegiate sports, GREENERY, I could go on and on about the University setting itself…ALSO you are only 4 hours on ONE ROAD to NYC. There’s megabus and different “china buses” available every day if you don’t have a car on campus.

PSU has a weekend in January that is funded by the university and students go every year and take masterclasses, see a show, make connections…EVERYONE participates in showcase…

PA Centre Stage does have a summer season (as discussed above), there are many performing opportunities during the year–there are 1 or 2 MFA Directing graduates that also do productions and they are wonderful

Every reputable MT school is going to have graduates working professionally and/or on Broadway. PSU has a bunch of grads on Broadway and on National Tours (I just finished a Bway 1st National!) including 3 grads from the recent class of 2010 on Bway!!

PSU has some brand new facilities that were built just 2 years ago. New dance studios and acting/studio areas.

I think you have some fantastic choices…these are just stream of conscious things that I think of when I think of my education and what PSU has to offer! BEST OF LUCK!! Wherever you go, you will make the most of your training.

Agh! I just accepted Penn State’s offer. Everything about this schoool excites me!!! Yay!

@EmsDad - thank you so much!

Congrats qjo2882! Feels good doesn’t it?

Congrats qjo2882! Happy that you’ve joined the PSU MT family. You are joining a very talented and special group of people. Enjoy the next four years. They will be amazing. I look forward to seeing you on stage!

Thank you all so much! I can’t express how fortunate I am feeling right now!

Congratulations, and welcome to PSU!!

Congratulations qjo2882! psucat did a great job of explaining the program and campus. My daughter is a sophmore in the MT program and is still VERY happy with her decision. Welcome to the PSU family.

CONGRATS!! I’m so excited for you…welcome to the family. You will soon bleed blue and white and call Happy Valley the best place on earth :wink: It has happened to all of us! If you have any questions (housing, what the food is like, etc etc ), please feel free to PM me.

Be sure to let the other schools know ASAP in case they have waitlists and kids are waiting to hear from them!

Congrats qjo!!! My D will be a senior next year when you are there. She has had so many wonderful opportunities since enrolling, and still feels it is the best program she could have chosen!

You are all so nice!!! I already bought my “We Are Penn State” T shirt! eeek!!! :)))
