Penn State funding cuts

I recently read this article regarding the state of Pennsylvania's budget cuts and how it is going to affect PSU. Maybe the reason a lot of us haven't received scholarships yet is because PSU is waiting to see what is going to happen; waiting to see if it will pass and if they will be able to accommodate for those cuts. We could see tuition rise (unsure how much) and programs disappear. Here's the article Penn State Live - Devastating appropriation cut advanced for Penn State

This article is from a year ago. Any idea if this went to affect & how they handled it?

The Governor and the Republican-controlled PA. legislature cut Penn State’s funding by about 25% last year and the Governor is proposing another 25% cut to funding this year. The total over those 2 years works out to around 54%.

Penn State never offered much financial aid to incoming students other than to Honor College students and athletes.

The main expected impact is much higher in-state tuition rates over the next few years. The market won’t allow the out of state tuition to go up too much.

Much more info and discussion at this link:

Thanks for the info, I learned a lot. All of it is really irritating though.

Legislators are listening - there is a chance to change things. This is particularly true because the chair of the appropriations committee of the Senate represents State College. Plus, the legislators know that parents of college students are highly likely to vote. Hopefully, the students will also vote in huge numbers and send a message.

There are legislative elections this year in PA… All of the state house and half of the state senate are being elected.

I hope so, I truly do. I don’t understand how politicians can keep cutting from education and still believe that there won’t be dire consequences. Here in Florida the Governor has cut a huge amount from education. Next year tuition for everyone is going to go up 20%. And that Bright Futures nonsense they have down here? Well, it doesn’t cover it.

So for an out of state student, how much will this cost?

The chart shows how devastating cuts could be avoided to higher education and public schools in Pa by simply closing tax loopholes, delaying a business tax cut and not starting a new loan program. PA. is the ONLY state in the country that does not tax cigars and chewing tobacco. We are one of the few states that still allows corporations to use the Delaware Loophole to avoid paying corporate income taxes.
