Penn State Housing?

I'm planning on accepting my offer of admission to Penn State soon. It says you have to choose housing. What are the options you have to choose from when accepting admission? Are there a lot? Also what would any of you who go/went to Penn State recommend?

Do you have to choose between a nicer more expensive suite-like style and a more traditional cheaper dorm? If so, then what would you prefer?

Thanks!

Great question,

Penn State has a bunch of residence hall areas to choose from, and the process can seem complicated. But here goes:

By far, most freshmen choose East Halls. This is kind of like a self fulfilling prophecy…they choose it because thats where most of the freshmen are…and the cycle keeps going, round and round. The dorms in East aren’t really great, but its more about the experience of being surrounded by your peers, and you are also located right near most of the Athletic Facilities (Beaver Staduim (Football), the Bryce Jordan Center (Basketball, THON), and the Soccer Staduim) as well as near the Intramural Fields. Its not really close to most of the academic buildings unless you are a Business Major.

South Halls and Pollock Halls are the next best alternative if the atmosphere if East is what you want, but the location isn’t. The quality of the rooms aren’t really much better, but they offer a little better dining, and a much better location. Both of these areas are close to down town, and most of the academic buildings.

West Halls is mostly Upperclassmen engineering students, and Athletes. Its a little bit quieter (ok, a lot quieter) but right in between the library and Rec Hall. Waring Commons has the some of the best Dining options on campus, but because EVERYONE knows this, everyone else comes there for lunch…waiting in line gets kinda old after a while. I stayed there my self, and I can tell you that despite being the oldest dorm complex on campus, the rooms are the biggest, and the furniture is movable, so its easy to loft your beds and fit a couch in the room.

North Halls offer mainly Suites (although there are some in South I believe) and if you are majoring in Business or Architecture, this might be the place for you. Its definitely quieter up here, and some of the SLO’s (structured living options) will pair you with people of the same major or interest which can help academically.

I hope this helps, if you have more questions, feel free to ask.

When one selects housing do they pick their first and second choices or just their first and if they don’t get it then they move them somewhere else randomly?

Also, can you tell me more about the North Hall’s SLO’s? Do you select you want to be in one of those when applying for housing?

Edit: I am coming in as an Econ major but am going to change it to DUS and try to get into Finance ASAP, does this mean that I won’t be able to get into a business SLO? Thanks!

Thanks! Also, do you know around what month you should find a roommate/pick housing? Since I don’t hear from schools until like April.
