I have a question... does anyone know the residency requirements and such to achieve in state tuition at penn state university park. I have heard of people renting/owning an apartment at penn state and achieving in state tuition. I am currently out of state, does anyone have any insight regarding possibly gaining in state tuition by my sophmore year if i had an apartment or owned property in PA?

My understanding is that you can NOT establish residency for instate purposes WHILE you are attending college there as an out of state student. Their instate residency requirements are very stringent. The only easy way to establish residency is to have your family MOVE to Pennsylvania a year prior to your enrollment in school.

[Determination of Residency](http://www.passhe.edu/executive/finance/Budget/tuition/Pages/Residency.aspx)

3 seconds to google this. My god, when I was a kid “look it up” meant going to a library and digging thru books. Kids today can’t type 5 words into a search engine and click the first link (99% of the time if you google well)

Puts new meaning to “let your finger do the walking”, huh? Not that these kids will remember that either, lol! Drives me nuts when DD calls me down to the other end of the house just to something google for her! I don’t think they teach them how to compose search terms that actually yield the desired results though…at least hers don’t!

type " residency for pennsylvania state schools" into google and the link I got is the #1 line.

and there is that place you can text a question and get an answer back.

I mean, come on, I guess even googling from the Iphone is too difficult for some people :-)

Penn State is actually not part of the PASSHE system, although the general gist of the residency rules are the same. Penn State has its own specific (strict) policy about this:

Our S is a student there, and I know they’ve always stressed to out-of-state students (and parents) that it is very difficult to change your status to in-state once you’ve started as an out-of-state student.
