Penn State Musical Theatre Auditions

Penn State is my first choice-I absolutely love the school and the program! After visiting and sitting in on classes/rehearsals I really want to be accepted. My question is this: If you consider yourself to be strong in two out of the three components of musical theatre, but you lack training in one, what are your chances of being accepted? I consider myself to be a strong singer/actor but I’m more of a “mover” than a dancer. (This could easily change with college training) I am really hoping that this isn’t too limiting if my songs and monologue are strong (assuming I get past pre-screening). Does anybody have experience with this? Thanks!

My S is auditioning this season as well so we don’t have any personal experience but I’ve read many comments here re: being a strong singer/actor and a good mover will likely serve you well. This year CMU cut the dance portion of their audition. Other schools indicate “the dance portion is for placement purposes”. So I wouldn’t let it discourage you. Break a leg, keep us updated!

I was really excited to see that CMU eliminated their dance audition, too! Thanks for the insight!

My D graduated from the PSU MT program in May. She was also more of a mover than a dancer. She had really not taken many dance classes when she was young. She did a lot of regional theater and it seemed like every time she tried to take a dance class she would have to drop it due to conflicts. Knowing that she was going to audition for MT programs, she tried out for and made her high school dance team (it was an AP dance program) her senior year. She also did take some dance classes the summer between her junior and senior years at our local CC. She did just enough so that she knew basic moves and terminology. She went into her PSU audition and did just fine- in fact she felt very comfortable at all of her dance auditions. While she was far from the best dancer there, she really put a lot of “attitude” into her dance and mainly kept a smile on her face and looked like she was having fun. You should be just fine- many programs are looking for people who have potential and look like they are willing to put for the effort. Best of luck!
