Penn State Online Application

It definitely won't hurt your chances, but when my friend and I attended their information session, they told us they don't accept teacher recs because there is no such thing as a "bad recommendation"..One student asked if he had a techer recommendation if it would enhance his chances and they said not at all, they won't look at them.

Reallyy?? Wow...So I guess it's usless sending in another essay as you said! Hopefully they'll read it thought, cause I think that says so much more about me than the activites essay! Like 1200 characters was nothing!!

Yeah, I know exactly what your saying..Just try not to sound to cliche though in your essay/personal statement..Talk about your character and it's relevance to Penn State

Yea I already sent in my essay/statement! It was more liek the activity that means the most to you and why?! I mean that didn't say so much about me..just shows im determined and wont give up..etc! I mean like the other essay i wrote says soo much more about me! I really hope they read it! What is PSU like...? Like its a big school..so I was curious about it..and lso whats the housing like?

It's a beautiful school..It's huge, but definitely really nice. It's like a mini-city so to speak and the housing is basically like any other large campus: small and compact, but with all the ammenities one needs to survive lol..

Yea I thought so! Yea I really want to go to PSU! I heard its gr8 and the campus is soo nice! Wow when do we find out if we got in, like mid december end of december yea?

Yeah, I heard like mid-end december..should be no later than that..I sure hope i get in !

My son is junior at PSU - University Park. Out-of-state requirements for UP are tougher than for in-state (like most public universities). I don't remember the numbers now, but I believe the SAT was more in the 1200-1300 and the GPA closer to 3.6??

Despite all the students there, everyone seems to find their own group. After 4 years of a private high school, he wanted to be with "regular people". Anyway - the campus is wonderful and he loves it. He applied about this time hi s senior year and heard before Xmas. It made life a lot easier, as it was his first choice. Good luck to all!!!

One other suggestion to anyone going to PSU from out-of-state (or even in-state). Do the ORION program the week before school starts. It is a wondeful way to make friends and get a jump on the school year.

WOW! That all sounds encouraging! One thing is Im out of state and live abroad! AHH! well lets hope they see this as bringin diversity to the campus..hehehe! Im soo excited! Btw GuyManBoy do u have AIM..it'd b nice speaking over that rather than on the message board..hehehe

Haha yes, I do have AIM..My s/n is MusclesFlyers feel free to talk to me anytime

Really, I havent heard of the ORION program, what is it?

my application is finally complete! i had to wait a week or so for it to say that they have recieved everything. i really hope to find out soon although im sure it won't be until december. also..my guidance counselor told me to send them teacher recs, which i did. if they don't read them i guess thats okay. I tried to make the personal statement thing as personal as possible but the space was definitely limited. anyway i hope we all get in!!!

congrats, jrklemp! I was told that teacher recs were unnecessary, considering the amount of apps Penn State receives, they mainly look at your academic record.

JRklemp, well at least I knwo someone else who sent in teacher recs! hehehe.i also sent in an extra essay..cuse i dont think the activites essay said much about me...in 1200charcters theres so much one can say! nyways hopefully we do all get in! I cant wait till mid december 2 find out! hehehe

For anyone interested, ORION is a week long program (the week before classes start), sort of like an Outward Bound thing - for just incoming freshmen. You go into the woods rafting, climbing, etc together with guides. You get 2 credits for it, but it is a great way to start college with a group of new friends. Most people in it don't know many other people either. My son is still friends with his group and he felt it well worth doing. This is particularly true if you are coming from out-of-state and don't know anyone. It's tough enough going far away to school, without having to worry about how to meet new people.

sounds really good!

I submitted my app last week and I'm pretty sure I had the summer admission box checked "no" when I really wanted it to be a "yes". I've been looking for an email address or something to contact the admissions office to let them know that it is incorrect, but I've had no luck. Any suggestions?

Does Penn State take the best of each section or only the best in one sitting? My best in one sitting was a 1400(720 math, 680 verbal), but my best composite would be 1420(720 math, 700 verbal). Should I be expecting to get in with a 3.4 unweighted GPA and a 1400 out of state?

i really would hope so! if not, then i dont think i have a chance with a 1290 SAT and 3.6 GPA
