Anybody have an opinion of either school? Difficulty of courses? Happiness of students? Social life? Town? Friendly students?

Thanks so much!!!!

Anybody have an opinion of either school? Difficulty of courses? Happiness of students? Social life? Town? Friendly students?

Thanks so much!!!!

I applied to both and didn’t get into PSU and still waiting from UDel and UDel is my first choice, PSU has better sporting events and slightly better academics but UDel campus is a lot nicer and the town is really but the people in the town hate the college students.

It is really my first choice because my dads cousins lives in delaware and he bought a house rite next to the campus and his kids live there and he chargers there friends and I would get to live there really cheep after freshman year.

Penn State

Thanks coolbrezze…can you share why? Thanks so much!!!

In my school (extremely competitive, suburban NYC), they are considered academic equals. Penn State definitely has a more famous name, mostly because of size and football. I would choose Delaware, though, because its much smaller and less in the middle of nowhere. Also, for some engineering fields (particularly ChemE), Delaware has really good programs.

Go to the in-state one. If neither are in-state, go somewhere else. Neither are good enough to go out of state.

Exception: Delaware actually has pretty cheap OOS tuition, so it’s a better choice than the private schools around its ranking, but Iowa and Minnesota have higher US News rankings, cheaper OOS tuition, and easier admissions than Delaware.

Delaware has a large percentage of OOS students as well (not sure about the exact numbers).

I didn’t realize that Penn State was easier to get into than Delaware

^^^I would not say PSU is easier to get into than Delaware.

I hope its not because I didn’t get into PSU and UDEL is my first choice. :P

When does UDEL send out their acceptance letters?

Did not apply to any of them. However, at my school, Penn State engineering is considered a stellar program than the one at UDel. At the end, it is the cost that should be one of the biggest factor in your decision.

Both are popular choices among NJ kids seeking to go out of state, although neither is an OOS bargain. PSu’s big time football is the most cited difference.

Penn State is located in a great college town, and while the residents often do get angry with the students (as it often is in college towns…), it is well-equipped for student living. It really depends on what you think you’ll major in, but it is very strong in engineering, and pretty respectable in math and the sciences. If you like football or think you’d like greek life, Penn State is where you’d want to be.

Students seem to be pretty happy, though I do know of some students getting angry about cuts in financial aid; however, I imagine it happens elsewhere.

The classes don’t seem to be very difficult, though the engineering program (from what I can tell) is rigorous. Anyway, unless you’re in-state for Delaware, I’d go to Penn State.

UDel has a lot of OOS students because it’s a small state so it’s easy to draw kids in from neighboring states.

Are you in-state for either?

The OOS costs are going to be highish. Can you afford them?

Cost of attendance - tuition, fees, room, board, books, misc

Penn St’s OOS cost of attendance is $39,500 per year

UDel’s OOS cost is $35,000 per year

it all depends on how much you want to pay… i took engineering at psu and it was fun but couldnt afford it. you should visit both schools. also you should compare the fees. PSU has alot to do though.

Penn State is a very good university. In US NEWS graduate school rankings, Penn state’s science programs are about #20 - # 30. It is #20-#40 in humanities and social sciences. It is #23 in engineering, #40 in business. In terms of strength of faculty, Penn State is comparable to schools like Duke and Brown.

In Pennsylvania, U Penn is an ivy league school, much more famous than Penn State. But in science and engineering, Penn State is not far behind.

Engineering: Penn State #23, U Penn #27
biology: Penn State #42, U Penn #21
math: Penn State #28, U Penn #18
physics: Penn State #23, U Penn #13
Chemistry: Penn State #16, Upenn #20
computer: Penn State #29, Upenn #20
earth science: Penn State #7, U Penn #67

University of Delaware is generally a #40 to #70 prgram. Penn State is better.

Is either school more difficult course-work wise once you are in?

Penn State University Park is more competitive than UD, as far as getting in goes.

My son looked at both Penn State and Udel. He’s now a junior at Udel and loves it! No regrets!
