I am shocked at the recent scandal regarding Penn State Athletics director. I mean it is just repulsive, and I just hope it doesn't cost JoePa or Prez Spanier their jobs. Any thoughts? Did this hurt this school on your list of top choices if admitted. I was just out there on Saturday, but one day later this surfaces. I am still Penn State hopeful! WE ARE...

Regarding G-Span, if he knew and lied about, he deserves to be shown the door. Not much to it.

Joe will probably retire after the season/before the bowl game, anyways. No one’s got the stones to fire him, so he’ll go out on his own terms. Even though he won’t get fired, his reputation will definitely be tarnished because of this.

Oh definitely agree, so you currently go to PSU? or waiting admission?

Any other thoughts?

There’s been a discussion of this scandal on another part of CC.

And reporting by the school newspaper here [Sandusky charged with sex abuse; Curley, Schultz, charged with perjury - The Daily Collegian Online](http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2011/11/07/grand_jury_presentment_story.aspx)

Do you think the scandal will somehow make it easier to be accepted?

Hahahaha I asked myself the same question. Go us die hard, blue and white Penn State fans. I hope so!

I don’t see a way this will impact current admissions at all.

Maaaybe if there’s a new president that wants higher admissions standards in the future, but not now.

^^ From the other thread:

This is going to affect Penn State’s reputation for years, and rightfully so. As for Saint Joe, he’s known about this since 2002, and did nothing. He should be ashamed.

Unfortunately if you plan on attending PSU in the future be prepared for dealing with a campus atmosphere which likely will have to deal with not just the legal isssues but also the civil litigations which will likely arise in the future. This will likely impact the college for many years. Once the victims lawyers get done with PSU tuition will likely rise to $75,000 yearly.

I’m no expert, but I believe institutions like Penn State carry insurance that would pay the settlements in any civil cases. Perhaps some one else actually knows.

Personally, I think Spanier should go.

If application numbers continue to rise despite tuition increases (a direct impact on students and their finances), I can’t imagine a situation such as this (where any impact on students will be indirect) decreasing application numbers. At worse it will slow the rate of increase, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The situation described by LasMa from the other thread could easily be an isolated incident. Also, if it really is close to Happy Valley like it suggests, chances are those parents already know all they need to know about Penn State and whether it fits their child or not.

Frankly, if people choose to view Penn State with the lens of “omg that place is full of immoral people” go right ahead, I won’t stop them. But they’re missing all the positive aspects of Penn State (academics, THON, the fact that researchers at Hershey successfully killed breast cancer cells, etc.), which is a shame.

My mom is an attorney and claims that JoePa only had hearsay info about what happened then he is in the clear, but he could/should have followed up more. Sandusky was not an employee at the time of the incidents so legally he had no responsibility on;y ethically.Of course she is a ax attorney so what does she know! LOL

Duke26 - I agree that dismissing PSU because of this incident would be a shame. Lots to offer students that do not involve football. As a PSU parent, I am horrified at this whole ordeal, but not to the extent of pulling my child out of school because of it. Unfortunately, as the parent of a Blue Band member, I feel for the kids in the band - which is so tied to the football program.

This news REALLY saddens…the school had SUCH a good reputation and SUCH prestige and now because of a few selfish perverts they’re the cover of every paper. Parents have lost trust and I’m now very scared that my parents wont allow me to go to Penn State because of this, and it was my top choice :/

There’s nothing changed about the PSU community. It’s a grand school, with wonderful people and distinguished programs. Because a group of men chose to circumvent the law, and their moral obligations, does not mean the other thousands of employees, professors, staff, students, are bad people or running a bad school. Things are awful enough without dramatic sweeping statements of blame and dishonor. We are Penn State, and we will hold our ground.

<<we are="" penn="" state,="" and="" we="" will="" hold="" our="" ground.="">></we>

Well said.

WE are Penn State. Sandusky, Curley, Schultz and even Joe Paterno and Graham Spanier are not.

It does raise some questions, but I will still be applying.
