Hello!

I am a very hard-working student and I think my chances of acceptance are pretty good to the Schreyer's Honors College. It is my number one choice! I was wondering if committing to Penn State University Park will increase my chances of getting into SHC because colleges like the statistic of Accepted/Attending. Also, any other tips on getting in are welcome. Thanks!

In general, one doesn’t want to give away one’s options easily. One doesn’t want to go ED to a school because it commits one’s only college admission and one’s money to one school. Unless there’s a payoff. We cannot know if there’s likely to be the expected payoff, admissions to Schreyer, presumably, without knowing more about your stats and money situation.

Please tell us that you’ve had the talk with your parents about what they will have to contribute and that they are on board with this. Then tell us your GPA, SAT/ACT, ECs, and success in and numbers of APs. Of what state are you a resident? in what major do you see yourself? Finally, why Schreyer?

Acceptance rates at Schreyer are almost as low as those of the seven Ivies, and Schreyer is not lacking in worthy candidates, so I would NOT commit to PSU if you wouldn’t be happy there as a non-Schreyer student. If PSU is your first choice, AND you can afford the tuition–which is pricey even for in-state students, then go ahead and commit. Even if you don’t get in as a freshman, you can apply in future years through their Gateway program.

Were you offered any merit awards when they accepted you into UP? That may be a clue as to how much they want you at PSU.

I want to second this:
