Penn State scholarship v/s Mich. State

HI, I am an International student and got in both psu and msu (mech. engg)

Obviously my first choice here is psu but msu is giving me 30000$ worth of scholarship
whereas penn state's giving none.

If both are state universities why doesn't psu give financial aid to int. students whereas msu does?

The schools are in different states. It seems MSU is trying to bring in some qualified international applicants while PSU is not.

Because Mich. State wants you badly, but Penn State doesn’t really want you.

Congratulations. Absolutely go to MSU. PSU is not worth $30K more unless you are so well to do that the money is not an issue at all.

Some colleges do not give financial aid to international students. That is their policy and their right. Some give it but in different ways and an individual might get some from one school and not the other. Neither PSU nor MSU guarantee to meet full need to ANYONE, including kids from their own state. Congratulations on the award. MSU is a great school. I’ve known kids who have picked it over PSU.

Michigan State, of course.

but isn’t penn state(UP) engineering WAY better than msu ??

Better in what way?

ranking, name, reputation

Ranking, reputation, and name are all the same thing.

What do you want to accomplish with a mechanical engineering degree that you think will be enabled by a Penn State degree but not a Michigan State degree? I’m having trouble imagining anything like that.

I don’t think there is an appreciable difference between Penn State and Michigan State to warrent spending money. At the end of the day the starting salaries for an ME will be no different.

OP probably thinks that the employers would prefer to hire PSU graduated engineers, or pay more for PSU engineers.

According to payscale.com, median ME salaries:

Michigan State $70K
Penn State $64K

http://www.payscale.com/research/US/School=Michigan_State_University_(MSU)/Salary

http://www.payscale.com/research/US/School=Pennsylvania_State_University_(Penn_State)_-_Main_Campus/Salary

that might be at the back of my mind but the main factor is that psu’s engg. program is highly regarded and esteemed

Will you be able to pay the full cost of attending PSU?

With the 30k in aid from Michigan state, will you be able to pay the balance (14k)? Is your 30k guaranteed for all 4 years?

IF the answer to both of these questions is no, then it is a moot point because neither are financially feasible options for your family. Please remember that you must show that you ar able to pay before you can get a visa to come to the US.

Is the $30k per year or is it divided by 4 years?

Are you planning to work in the US? Many techie companies will not hire int’ls.

i think you misunderstood , 30k is for four yrs not per year.
And yes my family can pay the amount but the lesser it is,the better

@mom2collegekids

30k for four years .

its not about the job but about the value of the program and the degree I receive

If your family can pay it without it being to painful, pick the one you prefer. Personally, I would not think it’s worth the cost differential and that is what the rest of us here has been telling you. If you think differently and get confirmation from those whose opinions you value, then you have to pay what PSU’s costs are to go there.

For goodness sakes, if you think an MSU degree is beneath you, then decline the offer and let them award the scholarship to someone who actually wants it!

And, since you can afford either school, this isn’t really a financial aid question. If you want more information about the engineering programs at these two schools, visit the [engineering majors](Engineering Majors - College Confidential Forums) forum.

If this is a thread to illicit help to “force” the state of Pennsylvania to match the scholarship that Michigan awarded you, it won’t work.

Michigan’s total costs for one year are $53,000.

Penn State’s total costs for one year are $44,000.

Even with the scholarship, Michigan is still more expensive than PSU.
