Hey, I am currently a senior and just wanted to know real quick if anyone knew what kind of scores Penn State requires to get some sort of scholarship money. I'll post my very broad and general scores below, and if anyone has a good idea if i would get some Merritt based aid from the university, that would be great to know.

I'm from new jersey, so I would have to pay the out of state tuition fees, but I was curious to see if anyone had an idea if i would receive any money from the university with those stats.

(I have a bunch of ECs, but they probably dont matter scholarship wise)

I don’t think OOS students have a lot of merit scholarship opportunities at Penn St except for those awarded to some honors college students. Admission into the honors program is very difficult…don’t know what % of those students get merit $$.

I assume you mean at University Park. At the satellite campuses there are some scholarships.

At University Park, the avg merit scholarship is $3500…not much.

Can you afford OOS costs at Penn State without merit? How much will your parents pay each year?

Penn State’s cost of attendance for OOS students is about $41k per year.

if you need merit to afford college, then you need to apply to some schools that will give you merit for stats.

If your lucky to get accepted to Schreyer Honors College (which is hard to do), then…

*Scholarships

All first-year Schreyer Scholars entering from high school receive an Academic Excellence Scholarship of $3,500 per year, renewable for a total of eight semesters, pending good academic standing and fulfillment of all requirements of the Schreyer Honors College. *

That $3500 amount is remarkably similar to what I wrote earlier…that the avg merit is $3500. That may be why some report that mostly only honors students get some merit.

But, obviously, $3500 is not much at all.

How much do you need? How much will your parents pay?

Hopefully, someone can post about how hard it is to get accepted to Schreyer…I know it’s super hard to get in.

Well I am just looking for a college that I feel i would enjoy going to, and get as much scholarship money as possible.

My older brother attends Rutgers as an in-state student, i have better scores than him all around, and he gets basically a full-ride at Rutgers. I was hoping for something comparable to this for Penn State because i rather go there than to Rutgers, but because of the lack of scholarship opportunities that you mentioned, i don’t know what to think anymore

Your older brother gets a full-ride (tuition, room, board, etc) at Rutgers with less than 1460 M+CR SAT???

Or does he just get free tuition or almost free tuition? Was his M+CR SAT over 1400?

Publics often require higher stats for OOS students to get big merit. And, higher ranked publics (like Penn State), already get enough high stats students without having to entice with big merit.

Anyway…with your SAT, to get bigger scholarships out of state, you need to go further down the rankings to the mid-tier schools (like those ranked between 75 - 100). A few of those schools are offering big merit to students with your stats…such as free tuition.

You also need to determine how much your family will pay each year. If your brother has a good scholarship at Rutgers, your parents may not want to spend much more than they are paying for your brother’s education.

You might want to look at this thread for assured scholarships for stats…
