I know there are plenty things to do while on campus but does it ever bother you that there is nothing around you in the nearby towns?

Actually there's a lot of things to do off campus. There's little eateries, bowling alleys, movie theater's, a ski resort for the winter, and other things as well to do. I really like the fact that there's so much to do on campus and off. You can also go to happyvalley.com to check out different events.

Is there wireless internet in all of the dorms? Should I bring an ethernet cable?

there is no wireless in the dorms. when you come to school, go to the bookstore and buy a ethernet cable and then register your computer, then you should be able to go on the internet. If you have any problem, you can bring your computer to ResCom in Pollock Commons or whatever residence hall you were assigned to. hope this helps.

You should purchase the cables you need before coming to school. Make sure you have one that is quite long as the connection could be far from your desk. Also, register your computer before coming to State College. Details will be forthcoming this summer.

I think the one I'm using right now at home is 10 feet. Will that be long enough for the dorms in South?

What kind of bed sheets do I need? On the website, it says "single, extra-long". But when I went to the department store today, all I could find was TWIN, QUEEN, and KING. Do I just buy TWIN? What about the "extra-long" part that they mention too?

No you need twin extra long. JCPenny has them:
http://www.jcpenney.com/products/C026525.jsp

also in a few weeks Target and Bed Bath & beyond will be getting in their college lines and they definitely will have Twin XL too.
Or do a google search for twin extra long sheets and you will find tons of them.

I have the same sheet size question. (by the way, single=twin). Looking at the floor plans for Atherton and Simmons, the bed size indicated is actually 2 to 4 inches shorter and 2 inches narrower than a standard twin mattress. Do standard sheets work, albeit a bit loose and crumply, or do special sheets need to be purchased through the school?

Standard beds are 75" long. Some of the floor plans say the beds are 76, some say 78. Either way both are larger than 75 and the list of "things to bring" says to get extra long. Also keep in mind that those floor plans are not exact.
You should get extra long sheets. You do not have to get them through the school.
By the way, my son moved into an apartment his second year and I do not know if that mattress was extra long but his sheets worked just fine there too.

Hi guys. Very specific question for anyone that might be there for summer session right now. For the dorms with the metal beds (like in simmons)
exactly how many inches from floor to bed are there. I'm looking for the clearance for storage units under the bed. Anybody got a tape measure?

ps you guys are awesome for answering everyones ?'s.

the distances is about 8-to seven inches, perhaps a little less. I think it is just enough to slip a shoebox underneath.

Wow, Frasi. That's all the clearance under your bed???? I know for sure last year we stacked two 6 inch high underbed plastic containers under sons bed so his is at least 12 inch clearance. We were able to put 4 of these plastic boxes widthwise under the bed and still have room for a big duffel bag of sports equiptment. That was without bed risers.

sax, if you know this, why are you asking in the first place? Again, I had a metal bed, and it was very low to the floor. Perhaps they have different ones at simmons, I was at hamilton.

A lot of people have bed risers for storage. I remember my bed being really low to the ground in Pollock a few years ago.

frasi...because I am a numbers person and am trying to optimize space. I am not trying to give you a hard time....or whatever...I was really trying to get an exact #. i know PSU has all sorts of different beds...I was just trying to get lucky if somebody was up there and could measure exactly. I was surprised at how little clearance you had...

Where can I purchase bed risers for a cheap price? Also, are there different sizes, or do they all fit PSU beds?

lil killer, bed bath and beyond, Target, probably wall mart. Anyway they are about ten bucks. Google "bed risers" and you can get an idea what types there are.The deeper the top opening is and the wider the bottom the more stable they seem to be.

many of the beds are different so no, not all bed risers work with all beds. It's frustrating.

i got my bed risers from bed, bath, and beyond and they worked on my bed in Beaver Hall.

Save your receipts, my daughter's bed would not work with them (bed legs were bigger than the opening in the risers) so we returned them and made our own out of blocks of wood.
