I think Penn State U Park is okay, but they're overrated..
Would you think "ew" to someone who attended this school?
I know a lot of Asian parents think lowly of this school.

A lot of Asian parents think lowly of any school that doesn't include "Ivy" somwhere in its one-sentence description, including Caltech, Northwestern, Georgetown, and WashU.

Penn State is a perfectly good, large, suburban/rural public university ranked in the top 50 universities in the country and good in many subjects, including business.

What other school would you correlate Penn State to?
A lot of parents I've talked to think Penn State is lower than SUNY Bing and correlate it to schools like Fordham U.

Penn State is better than SUNY Bing. Again, it depends on your major, but overall Penn State is ranked 48 among such universities as UWashington, UC-Davis, Syracuse, UFlorida, UC-SB, and UIUC, while SUNY Bing is ranked 74.

Penn State is a national public university and has a better reputation than Binghamton. No contest. Penn State has consistently been in the top 40s for many years with some top programs.
Binghamton has few if any highly regarded programs.
The main attraction to Binghamton is the cost, certainly not the academics. SUNYs have gone downhill the last 10-20 years.

I would almost go so far as to say that New York has one of the most disappointing higher public education systems - despite the fact that it is one of the most populous states (3rd in the country?), New York has very mediocre public universities when compared to other state universities.

Penn St is an awesome school, it's about the same as UPenn

:)

uhh im pretty sure its a little better than UPenn

i think they were making a joke on the fact that the two are often confused :)

yea... like upenn's clothing site is notpennstate . com

uhh im pretty sure its a little better than UPenn

That'll be false.

PSU is a great school.

what does a lot of asian parents thinking lowly of this school really have to do with anything?

lol

PSU is really easy to get into, but some of the programs it has are pretty good.

It's better than SUNY schools but a big step below UNC, UC's, and Michigan

penn state has nothing over UIUC....in any department especially engineering/business

it's not that far below UNC. UNC tends to be overrated due to tough OOS admits.

Penn State has a very good reputation for a public school. Also, don't discount the alumni network, it is extremely strong. If you can get into their honors program, it's on par with some of the top schools in the country.
Living in NY, I can agree with those who said SUNY is lacking.
My ex lives in Pa, so my D gets to go to PSU at a resident if she chooses to go there.
I told her she would have to apply to at least one public for financial reasons.
After visiting a few SUNY schools she actually said to me "boy, I'm glad you and dad got divorced and he moved to PA cause I'd rather flip burgers in Mcdonalds than go to a SUNY".
Not that they are bad, they just aren't on par with other states schools and not for everyone.

The honors program isn't on par with the top schools in the country, though its definetely one of the best state school programs and is very difficult to get in.
(just judging from who gets in and who doesn't)

"A lot of Asian parents think lowly of any school that doesn't include "Ivy" somwhere in its one-sentence description, including Caltech, Northwestern, Georgetown, and WashU."

not really.

Some asians are elitist and dont like schools with easy admission standards. ex: "i want my kid to be with the best of the best scholars in the nations".....................etc

swatteam2010 i was only joking

Barrons - put a lid on it. Your subtle attempts to uplift big ten schools, and therefore your alma matter are apparent. UNC is far better than Penn State and better than Wisconsin by a decent margin.
