I was recently accepted to Penn State. I’ve always considered Penn State as one of my top schools and was happy to be accepted that the campus that they gave me was Abington, not University Park.
I put University Park as my first choice campus, but the admission letter says that this campus, specifically, received a lot of students this year. I know it’s typical of students to start at a different campus and move on to the main campus later, but I would really want to start and finish my four years of college at University Park.
I wrote a letter to the admissions officer asking if they would consider moving me from Abington to University Park, and that if they can, I would definitely enroll.
Do you guys think this would work at all?
You put UP as your first choice, so they already rejected you for it. If there’s no new information or changes to your app, a letter is unlikely to change their minds.
The only way this would work is to materially change something in your application…ie test scores, major applied for etc…Otherwise, you’ve already been denied main campus. They only offer you another campus after they’ve evaluated you for the first campus.
Change your major, your starting semester (ex: change to summer start) or submit better test scores. I wouldn’t bother with a letter at this point. I’d call admissions and ask if there is anything you can do to get into UP.
What major did you apply for and what is your GPA and test scores?
@jlhpsu Thanks for the comment. I picked Information Systems major and was accepted to the Smeal School of Business. Since I dont have anything to add to the application maybe I should add on the letter that I am willing to change the major?
GPA 3.9
SAT new 1380
With your stats, I would call and ask to be reconsidered for DUS (undecided) summer session at UP campus. Normally, DUS fall would also work but my guess is DUS fall is already full. Do not waste time writing a letter. Call and ask to speak to an admissions representative (the people who answer the phone are not reps). Smeal is UP’s most competitive major to get into. And Supply Chain Information Systems is also a very good major at PSU. That is likely why they deferred you to a branch campus. From DUS (undecided) you can work towards any Smeal major.
It may be too late, but it’s worth a try with your scores. But call - don’t e mail, and certainly don’t snail mail. Every day more spots are taken.
