Hi, im currently a senior in high school with a 3.3 gpa and got a 1760 on my first SAT(planning to retake it in a month). I learn muay thai at progressive martial arts. I have about 50+ hours in volunteer service. I help my parents work after school everyday. Please tell me my chances. I really want to get into this school. thank you. I also took 4 AP Classes.

Your odds aren’t very good. The bubblechart indicates that you’d need at least 3.5-3.6 to get in with that score, unless that 3.3 is UW. GPA is 2/3 of the decision and 3.3 is low, borerline for branch campus. To increase your chances, apply now (sending new test scores when they are available) OR complete your application now, waiting for your new test scores before you submit, as long as it’s before Nov 1. In addition, indicate you’re willing to do summer session and apply “undecided”.

Whats undecided

When you apply make sure you mark you’re willing to start in the summer if you don’t get admitted to the fall term. That will probably get you in. Also being a pa resident helps if you are. I do know they base most of the decision in gpa but you have a lot of aps. I’m in the opposite situation. High gpa (3.7) low sat (1650). Apply now and send in new sats later but make sure to let them know you’re retaking it.

Those stats are actually very good for the branch campuses. I know many people who got in with less than a 3.0 to the branches. You also have a decent shot at the summer session. For main campus, I’d apply undecided (which means you do not declare a major on your application) and I’d also say that you are willing to attend the summer session prior to fall start. I’d also make sure you get your application in before November 30th. All of those things will give you your best shot. Keep in mind that Penn State will recalculate your GPA to their standard…so all the stats that people post for grades don’t mean all that much. At my daughters school an A is a 94%. At other local schools it’s 92% or even 90%. Penn State takes that into account, converts your grades to their own scale and compares that way. Which is why the bubble or scattergram charts don’t mean all that much, and is also why you will see people that you thought had low stats get in and someone with much higher stats either not get in or get summer session. Obviously, the higher the stats, the better. But don’t be frightened away by the people posting 5.0GPA’s. Their school is just on a different scale. Good luck! We are in the waiting game too - my daughter applied 9/1 - so now we just wait and hope her scores were good enough for at least summer! If not, she will go to Altoona, but main is really her first choice.
