I've been accepted to both Penn State - University Park and Rutgers - New Brunswick and I am completely torn! I honestly have no preference for one right now, help! If anyone could offer feedback/reasoning for their choice I would greatly appreciate it! Right now I am in the Division of Undergrad Studies at Penn State and the School of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers.

One nice thing about Rutgers is its proximity to NYC – it’s an hour train ride away.

They’re both good schools. Visit both and look into the programs you’re interested in…go look at the buildings where your classes will be held, etc…

Quite honestly, I think Penn State is a much better school. That said, it should be noted that I’m from Pennsylvania and it seems like half of the college graduates in Pennsylvania went to Penn State and they all talk about what a great school it is, so I may not be offering the most objective opinion (although I am not going to PSU). Penn State certainly has a better reputation in Pennsylvania and I think it has a better reputation nationally. I’m not sure how much you want to consider that, though.

Have you visited both? Very different “campus” setup - Rutgers is a combination of 5 separate campuses connected by busses, separate student unions, dining, dorms. Disjointed feel and frankly the amount of bussing required to attend classes, go home…PSU (main) is a single big campus. Ds was accepted to both and will have to decide whether the savings with instate tuition overcomes the feeling we get when we visit RU. Both don’t offer great finaid but there is some.

Are you in-state for either school? Will your parents pay the full cost for you to go to the out-of-state school? If not, then the choice may come down to which will be affordable. Neither school will give financial aid to OOS students to make their schools affordable.

However, if money is no object… …then I would go to Penn State…but Rutgers is still great, too.

I’m actually from Virginia, so both are out of state… At this point my parents aren’t too concerned about money but rather what school is “better” in the sense of their academic reputation and things like that. I also received my acceptance from Binghamton university so I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on that school…

Binghamton, Penn State or Rutgers??!

Penn State!

Few people outside of the area have ever heard of SUNY Bing.

I am a Rutgers grad and my daughter is a Penn State grad. I say Penn State all the way! I have nothing but good things to say about that school…wonderful college town, great academics, fun Big 10 sports. As my daughter said by the end of her freshman year, “They must put something in the water here, because everyone I know doesn’t just like Penn State…they LOVE it!”. Plus, there’s a very active alum network throughout the US that helped during the job search process.

Second Catie33. PSU is a school people love. RU offers a good maybe equal education in a marginal environment in all terms of the word.

I have never been to Penn State so this might be alittle biased. I know though that it is kinda in the middle of nowhere and is not close to any big cities. Rutgers is only a hour from NYC by train and alittle more then that from Philly by train. I have also been to the Rutgers Campus which is spread out but very nice. New Brunswick is a happening little city and there is some stuff to do there.

SUNY Bing has a great reputation. Penn State is known as a party school and kind of a zoo. Rutgers is known as big and rambling.

Why don’t you go to one of the incredible schools in VA? How can you beat UVA, William and Mary, etc.??

After those first two you can beat the rest. I think we can assume the first two were not likely options.

Penn State > Rutgers > Binghamton

Binghamton is the strongest SUNY school, and it’s overall a decent place. But you should only consider it over Penn State if you have financial issues.
