Penn State v. Purdue??!

I'm having a ton of trouble deciding between Penn State U-Park or Purdue University.. I've been accepted to Penn State as a Summer 2010 student for Smeal (but I plan on switching to being a Math major) and after summer I would start in the fall as a normal student.
I was accepted into Purdue's College of Science as a Mathematics major but I plan on switching my major to engineering (not sure which type yet).

My question is: Which school will give me a better education: Purdue's engineering program or going to Penn State as a math major? I'm an out-of-state student for both schools.

Thanks!! :)

I think what you need to decide is whether you want to study math or engineering. My older son graduated with a math degree last year; my younger son is an engineering student. Their programs were very different (and their job opportunities will be, too). What do you see yourself dong in five years?

Have you visited the campuses?

My son visited both and definitely preferred Penn State. While he liked the Purdue campus and enjoyed all the people he met, he just liked the overall “feel” off Penn State better. By a long shot.

To be fair, altho he is not “from” either area (OOS for both), my husband’s family is from Penn - just about 90 miles from PSU, so maybe he felt a little more comfortable there than in the mid-west.

I don’t understand this. Why switch to Math at PSU and to Engineering at Purdue? You can switch to Math or Engineering at either place. Both have very good engineering programs.

I am an international student and of all universities in which I got in I am confused between Purdue and Penn state university- University Park.

I want to go for Computer Engineering/Science course.

As ranking do not differ too much I need some points to differentiate both of them.

From what I’ve heard and read, I have an inclination towards PSU for the following reasons:

 • More established alumni network
 • More on campus and off campus internships/jobs
 • Athletics( I am much interested in soccer)
 • More lively campus
 • Good Minors (I want a minor in psychology and music)
 • More culturally active ( I am a drummer)
 • PSU parties too with more m/f ratio. (not the deciding point)
 • Engineering is almost the same (from what I’ve read).
 • Weather is the same ( IDK much abt it, though)

Things I want to know -

Am I missing any important point to consider between the comparison.
How is the outside university park campus as I’ve seen it’s in the middle of nowhere.

Your answers would be much appreciated. Any of your personal experience would be better.

“How is the outside university park campus as I’ve seen it’s in the middle of nowhere”… yes its in the middle of nowhere but the town itself wonderful. There is a lot going on , great restaurants, shopping and cultural events. You wont feel isolated. There are express buses to NYC if you feel the need to escape some weekend. A tiny airport near the campus will connect you to Philly or DC. State College is one of my favorite towns in the northeast.
