Penn State

Hey,
Well Im applying to a handful of Architecture schools; Notre Dame, Penn State, Northeastern, Syracuse, and Pratt along with a bunch of non-Arch ones and was wondering how would they be ranked?

I thought i had a pretty good idea but now I'm kinda shaky on it.
I was wondering if someone could tell me what they would rank them, Best-> Worst.

[Top Undergraduate Architecture Programs | World Ranking Guide](Top Undergraduate Architecture Programs | World Ranking Guide)

What state are you from? I’d go to Penn State or Syracuse over any other if you’re in state. Northeastern isn’t as good as the 4 others.

Personally, I’d rank them:
Syracuse > Notre Dame > Penn State > Pratt > Northeastern.

Im from Jersey.

consider adding tulane to your list

“Syracuse > Notre Dame > Penn State > Pratt > Northeastern.” sounds about right. (Though NEU’s co-op program is reallly good)

Consider RPI and RISD, since it seems like you want to stay relatively close to jersey.

there are a couple questions you need to ask, rather than location (although an important factor), is 5 year BArch or 4 year BS/BA? it seems like you want to go the 5 year route, and out of the schools you mentioned, so i would go to syracuse, not because of the ranking, but because it is a great architecture school with a great program. that was my #2 choice, had i not gotten into cornell i would have gone there. penn state is also very good (their new studio space…AMAZING) virginia tech is also a good 5 year program. another question to ask: do you want more of a DESIGN education or a TECHNICAL education? schools like RPI and carnegie melon tend to focus more on the technicality of architecture…the engineering behind it, rather than the artistic and conceptual design, something you will learn at syracuse and penn state. its usually those schools which ask for a portfolio have a more design curriculum.

Right now i’m looking at a 5 year BArch, with a more Design oriented curriculum.

Now that it has come down to it I only applied to Notre Dame, Penn state, and Northeastern. I knocked Pratt out because its too close to home, and I didn’t want to go to college in NYC. Syracuse… welllllllll, I forgot to hand in the goods. I’ve gotten into Penn state already, and am relatively sure I will get into Northeastern. Notre Dame is kind of a long shot, but I remain hopeful.

Notre Dame has kind of been my dream school my whole life but now I am reexamining whether it would be worth it. I mean a Notre Dame education is looking to be around $50-60,000 a year, while Penn State is closer to $30,000. So I don’t know if the difference in quality of education is really worth $100-150,000 more in the long run.

Got in so far …Penn State, CalPoly, Auburn, Illinois Institute of Tech
Waiting to hear from…Cornell, Notre Dame, U Texas Austin, Rice, Syracuse, USC, Virginia Tech,
How to decide?
