What is the cheapest way to get to Penn station to the university other than walking and other illogical ways. 3 ppl 2 large suitcases and 2 small ones. I flew to Virginia, will drive to baltimore will ge tthe mega bus to ny. Now how do i get to the university. is there a bus? how much would a taxi be? i may need two taxis. Is the subway a good option my aunt doesnt think so b/c of all the luggage. any shuttles working in that area?

Subway is best, but you might want to take a taxi if it’s rush hour, since the trains can get very crowded. If you take the subway, the 1 goes directly to Columbia. The subway will cost you $6.75. I think you guys will be okay with one taxi, which shouldn’t cost more than $20.

so 4 suitcases between 3 people?

Take the freakin subway. You take the #1 train uptown (you won’t want to be bothered changing from the express to the local at 96th, and you definitely don’t want to accidentally end up in harlem with all your crap). That’s got a red circle with a “1” in it.

A taxi from 34th to 116th would be $15-20 depending on exact avenue and street where you hailed it. and you’re at the mercies of traffic if you take it.

No buses you could take are worth the effort relative to the #1 train.

Took almost your exact route to get back to CU from spring break (I was in D.C.) Take the 1 train.

Oh, be sure to just ask the bus driver where the subway entrance is if you’re not sure. The Megabus drops you off like a block and a half away from the main entrance.

ok thanks for the replies, my third person/mother brought two more bags blankets and keyboard and monitor so i may end up witha taxi in the end and tell them to take the subway coming back lol.

anyone have any ideas on what we can do for fun in 3 hours around columbia? i was going to take them to koronets, central park, need one more place around that area.

St. John’s on Amsterdam is a favorite tourist spot. It’s totally gorgeous.

I just got back from a trip to NYC (1st time in 7 years). I was surprised by the number of Taxi-minvans/SUVs roaming the streets. We took cabs from mid-town down to Chinatown during the busiest times, and the highest fare was about $17 including tip. We also took the kids to see the American Museum of Natural History at 79th St. and Central Park West. If you like dinosaurs, minerals/gemstones and dioramas, then give it a try. I enjoyed it for the first time since 1st grade (39 years ago)!

don’t take your mom and aunt to koronets!

You can take a walk down by the (Hudson) river . Don’t try to cram too much in. Getting around in a city takes time with all the lights and one ways (Columbia is on the west side).
