Okay, this is kind of off-topic, but I had an argument today (lame, I know) with my friends about whether University of Pennsylvania was called Penn or UPenn.

The didn’t believe me when I said it was PENN, not UPenn… so do you guys know of any articles or something where it says “University of Pennsylvania is called PENN!”?

Lee Stetson: "Hello, this is Lee Stetson, Dean of Admissions at the University of Pennsylvania. Just for everybody's information, Penn does not refer to itself as UPenn. I look forward to trying to answer as many questions as I can given the limited time that we have."

when i was there this summer for a program they gave me a lanyard that says upenn. its not a big deal what its called, everyone will still think youre talking about penn state anyway.
Technically I think its Penn.

Penn State never calls itself Penn, it's always Penn State or PSU, in part because they realize that Penn has dibs on the name Penn.

Sadly, the name UPenn is merely a contrivance for those who wish to make the name more distinctive from that of the state school and prevent people instinctively adding the 'state' when they hear Penn. Virtually everyone here calls it Penn, UPenn is only brought out when talking to people outside of the school.

one of the reasons why "upenn" is popular is because locally penn is also referred to as the "u of penn", hence the shortened version's ubiquity...

i'm still amused at how a family friend heard that i go to penn and said "wow, that's a great value"

i personally say "university of pennsylvania" if anyone asks where i want to go to school, because i think that "u penn" is wrong, and that "penn" will be incorrectly interpreted as penn state.
