Penn v. Michigan?

“It’d be interesting if people at UofM started chanting that at Ohio State or MSU games.”

They used to chant that at Wisconsin games.

hey guys, im an international student… .

i want to know which one would be a better option for me= McGill or Uof Michigan for mechanical engineering…

keep in mind that money is an issue cuz im from Pakistan… my dad can afford a maximum of 20000$ a year. the international tuition+living for michigan comes up to be 40000$s a year … on the other hand McGill = tuition + living comes to around 24000$ a year

i can take a loan ( my brother inlaw and an uncle are US citizens ) but it will take a long time to pay them off… as for McGill i wont need to take a loan ( ill borrow the 4000 from my bro)

so which should be a better option? taking as much as 80000 in loan and a little of financial aid that the uni offers to international students( im not sure if ill be able to get that much loan or any significant financial aid etc) or choose McGill where ill have no prob financially ?

im comparing McGill with Umich cuz USNWR ranks McGill higher in engineering than Umich… and there isnt much of a difference in the overall ranking.

please guys help. thanks

Most people at the elite schools I know who start out as engineers in college or even graduate with an engineering degree don’t get engineering jobs anyway. They either become investment bankers, consultants or lawyers-all of which are better compensated professions than engineering.

Penn is a far more prestigious school than Michigan in the eyes of corporate America. If you can afford it, Penn is the clear choice. If you can’t afford Penn, Michigan is an excellent world-class backup.

A Michigan engineering degree is more prestigious than a Penn engineering degree.

“im comparing McGill with Umich cuz USNWR ranks McGill higher in engineering than Umich… and there isnt much of a difference in the overall ranking.”

I never saw a ranking of any Canadian university for engineering at USNWR. Can you elaborate please?

the overall ranking:
[World’s Best Colleges: Top 400 - US News and World Report](http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/worlds-best-colleges/2009/06/18/worlds-best-colleges-top-400.html)

engineering and IT:
[World’s Best Colleges: Engineering and IT Universities - US News and World Report](http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/worlds-best-colleges/2009/06/18/worlds-best-colleges-engineering-and-it-universities.html)

OIC. Times ranking that USNWR published this year. Now I understand.

According to that ranking, Michigan is the #18 school overall, not never that high or higher in any of the categories. Seems rather inconsistant.

Anyway, according to the place the USNews stole that from, that ranking is for technology, not necessarially engineering. USNews added that themselves.

If you do a google search, you’ll see that ranking is generally considered less accurate than the Shanghai Jiao Tong University university rankings. According to those rankings, Michigan is 5th and McGill is 49th in Engineering, and 21st and 60th overall respectively.

The big criticisms are that the rankings are too heavily based on peer review, being easily to manipulate, and that they are too volitle with very different lists from year to year.

aaaaaa

anyone just tell … is mcgill somewhere at the level of michigan in mechanical engineering?

No it’s not. Mechanical engineering is one of Michigan’s best fields, I believe it’s considered either #2 or #3 for mechanical engineering. I can’t tell you whether or not it’s worth the extra money, but UMich is one of the best places for mechanical engineering.

THE-QS did say it’s for “the world’s top universities in Engineering & IT based on responses to the Academic Peer Review”
[QS Top Universities: University rankings in Technology](http://www.topuniversities.com/worlduniversityrankings/results/2008/subject_rankings/technology/)

… but it doesn’t mean that this ranking has any credibility.

michigan engineering has so much tradition. they had a wall at eecs with all that michigan engineering has accomplished in the past 200 years, it’s amazing.

mechanical engineering is just ridiculous, unless you got in MIT or Stanford, you should goto Michigan for mechanical engineering.

“THE-QS did say it’s for “the world’s top universities in Engineering & IT based on responses to the Academic Peer Review”
QS Top Universities: University rankings in Technology”

I stand corrected. I just looked at the title. Sorry.

OHHH, Upenn? I thought you meant Penn State. In that case, *** are you even asking for. UPenn hands down.

“I can’t tell you whether or not it’s worth the extra money”

that is exactly my question… because ill have to take almost 75000$s in loan for michigan ( i dont know if ill be able get that much loan) on the other hand ill be able to finance my education at Mcgill… so that way???

PA of UPenn 4.5
PA of Michigan 4.4

Michigan Engineering>Penn Engineering

The more relevant question is … which engineering program is more well known in your home country?

dragzta, 75k loan is a quite a bit of loan (downpayment for a condo), I think you should goto McGill. I think if you like Michigan and the difference is under 10k a year, it’s worth it, but that’s too much to goto Michigan over McGill.

Go to McGill. Also, have you checked out U of Toronto or the U of Waterloo?

Go to McGill. I love Montreal!
