I’m totally torn between the two.

I -might- just pick Berkeley because it is more practical… and since it has a better reputation internationally anyway.

Penn’s great, it just that it’s too far/cold. Lol.

at the academic level, berkeley is world renown and exceeds penn in most academic departments. outside of wharton, i think penn gets too much credit for what i believe is just a good college, and not a great one (relatively speaking).

I’d disagree. Penn’s college is underrated, if anything.

^ Indeed. While perhaps not as many as Berkeley, Penn has as many top-10 and top-20 liberal arts departments as other schools generally deemed to be liberal-arts powerhouses (e.g., Columbia). However, Wharton’s preeminence seems to eclipse that fact for some people.

ilovebagels, if you think Penn is underrated, do you seriously think it should be ranked above Stanford and MIT, since Penn is currently ranked 4th, tied with Stanford, MIT and Caltech. If there’s truly one great school that is underrated, I think it is Berkeley. Its #21 ranking is ridiculous. Berkeley has far better brand name than many of those schools that were ranked above it. The scholars, top academics, college deans, provosts and university presidents have even ranked it just behind HYPSM. How could these people be wrong! Anyway, this has been debated a lot of times on CC and it gets really tiring to debate about it over again.

PiggyPoo, not only is Berkeley more practical for you, it also is more fun. Berkeley is beautiful. Its campus is amazing with lots of awesome architecture. It has a vibrant and very interesting scene that caters to students. The students at Berkeley have come from all over the world and they are some of the best minds in their respective countries. The Berkeley experience is unmatched especially for international students. There are clubs at Berkeley for Filipinos and they travel to the Philippines from time to time. There’s a bright young chap at the famous, Philippine Science High School, who got into Berkeley as well and I’m trying to get his name and give it to you, because he is strongly considering in going to Berkeley too. Please check your PM from time to time.

RML, as you did not attend Berkeley undergrad (as you know a completely different experience to that of a Ph.D. student) or grad, how can you comment on how “fun” the Berkeley undergrad experience is, or would be for PiggyPoo?

I have heard reports that it is great, and that it sucks. However, not having studied there myself, I refrain from commenting.

I have two brothers in law who run AON in the Mexico/Latin America region. One Berkeley, the other Penn-Wharton. They both had great experiences. I don’t think reporting second hand information is of any value to OP.

Underrated for undergrad? Yes, absolutely.
