Being the rash person that I am, I put down my deposit for Columbia on Saturday. But after doing some research, I've decided on Penn. Penn is still cheaper even with the $500 wasted on Columbia. I'm from New York, so I'll always have my lovely city during the summer and during winter break, plus Columbia's nonexistent campus community really turns me off, and I hear that the Barnard girls are getting to be insufferable. The Core looks great, and I have wanted to read many of the books in it for quite a while, but there's a difference between reading the book and having to write a lengthy paper on it, when there are 4 other classes to simultaneously take. I could go on and on..but I'm so excited for Penn now it's unbelievable. Thanks for the advice, all of you! But I'll wait until like the 25th to make the Penn deposit, lol.

she really nailed it there. The point is, Yes, Columbia is in NYC, but NYC is going to be there after you graduate. You can do the NYC thing any time in your life. You can only do the COLLEGE thing once, and that time is now.

Congratulations! You'll love Penn!

"Penn is one of the only schools to where you could easily get a job in the financial services industry on Wall Street or where ever WITHOUT having to go to Wharton. Wall Street recruits out of the College(SAS) all the time. Columbia is far to strict on their curriculum. I like Penn's "Open Concept"."

I find it VERY hard to believe that Wall St. recruiters wouldn't manage to make it 30 minutes uptown to recruit at Columbia.

Traffic is pretty bad ;)

i'm not sure where you heard that barnard girls are getting to be "insufferable" or why you believed it, and i'm sorry that was a factor in your decision. you cant tell a barnard girl from a columbia girl, and believe it or not, many columbia girls are even worse than barnard ones.

Just to clarify something. A Columbia girl won't be compared to a Barnard girl. Barnard girls are, sadly, sometimes looked down upon by Columbia students. Some Barnard people try to pass off as Columbia students to gain more prestige, in fact.

And to the OP, I'm in a very similar situation, considering between Penn (SEAS), Columbia (SEAS), and Berkeley. Just got off the phone with a student at Penn who is doing the same major as me (comp sci). I found him extremely helpful; he swayed me towards Penn (he wasn't biased though). So try to talk to current students, especially those with similar interests as you.

I'm so glad you chose Penn. You'll be very glad you did I think.

Congratulations on your choice, fexeminae. But you should let Columbia know that you no longer plan on attending, just to be nice; it'll help them out with administrative stuff. While as a Columbia student I have to say it's too bad you're not going to be a lion next year, I guess it's important to note that you're from NYC. If I had lived so close, I wouldn't have even applied to Columbia to be honest. Same principle applies to Penn if I lived in Philly. College is all about doing/learning new things.

I'm actually leaning back towards Columbia at this point. I have an overnight visit at Penn tomorrow, so that should help to solifify things for me. At least I hope it does, lol.

One thing to take into account- Columbia is pretty weak in terms of community life, and the student body is very cliquey. After the first year most people end up going out downtown. If you don't care about this, Columbia is great, but I know many people who think it can be lonely at times. Penn is a much more vibrant campus experience, and while there is a frat scene there are plenty of people not in that scene.

fex, did you spend an overnight at columbia?

Not yet, blah, but I will be doing an overnight at Columbia from the 22nd to the 24th.

im deciding on duke, penn, columbia also
as of right now...penn is #1 choice (a surprise to me cuz i've wanted to go to columbia over penn and duke since freshman yr)
but somehow...Penn's interviewerS got me to like penn alot.
Columbia interviewer made me not liking it so much and i also visited columbia junior summer. just didnt feel the excitement
with schools of these caliber...academically probably not much diff overall
so upenn's upbeat vivacity wins my vote right now ...plus i want to do business...nothing else can be better than Wharton!!

penn of course.
