Penn vs. Cornell

for many it is illogical to go home for such a short period of time...

if we didnt have fall break we could get a full week for thanksgiving...

my roomie from california and i stayed at cornell last thxgiving...it was good times...

freshman year was horrid though...cornell needs to open up that thxgiving dinner you pay for to all students...

Lots of people like going home for Thanksgiving break. For most students it is their first time home from school when all of their friends are back. It is a lot more accessible to get home from a major city like Philly than it is from Ithaca, but a kid who can't afford a plane ticket is stuck regardless of what school s/he is at.

One thing students rarely consider is how easy it is to get home from college if the need arises. You really don't know what is going to happen at any point in your 4 years at school and there may be a situation where you want to get home ASAP. For me to get home from Penn any weekend by bus it would cost me less than $30 round trip and take 3 hours each way. For my friend at Cornell he said he would have to take Gray Hound to Albany then to NYC then home all taking more than 12 hours. For someone who needs to take a plane getting out of Philly is a breeze. For someone to get out of Cornell you have to take an hour trip to Syracuse and fly from the smaller airport.

"For my friend at Cornell he said he would have to take Gray Hound to Albany then to NYC then home all taking more than 12 hours"

yeah, you're friend's an idiot, that's why it takes him 12 hours.
Greyhound bus from Ithaca to Albany is 6 hours (or 8.5 if you take the one that has a lot of stops). Albany to NYC is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

--OR--

You can apply common sense and take the bus from Ithaca right to NYC for a 5 hour commute. What a revolutionary idea!!!

"For someone to get out of Cornell you have to take an hour trip to Syracuse and fly from the smaller airport."

Or you can just fly out of Ithaca. Tell your friend to do that and he'll be in NYC in an hour.

This thread is an example of why I hate School A vs. School B threads.

^^We live in DC. If he can get from Ithaca to NYC then NYC to DC it'll still take him 10 hours according to your calculations compared to 6 hours direct drive according to google maps. Also, flights are really expensive. A quick search on Expedia showed the cheapest one way ticket at $300 if you were to leave on August 23.

there are sometimes bus services set up by cornell to take students to maryland or dc...

but yeah travel into ithaca during orientation is a pain in the neck...

I used to live in DC as well, it's not that hard to get a ride with somebody who has an extra seat in their car and is also going to DC. There's usually ads online, tell him to look there.

The cheapest one-way direct flight from Philly to DC (on august 23) from expeida is $448. Granted, you can get a flight for as cheap as $175 from philly to DC ... buuuuut you'll first have to fly from philly to to Columbus, them from Columbus to Cincinnati, then from Cincinnati to Washington DC - total duration, 7 hours and 49 minutes.

"there are sometimes bus services set up by cornell to take students to maryland or dc..."

ah, yes, i forgot about those!

The bus service from cornell to maryland/dc only runs around major holidays if I'm not mistaken. It doesn't really work well if you need to go home on a random weekend.

Also, who would fly from Philly to DC? The time you spend going through security and other stuff would take just as long, if not longer than a $20 bus ride of a $50 train ride.
