Penn vs. Michigan

I've been accepted to both engineering schools.

I'd rather go to Penn, though it would involve some significant debt for me, which I am willing to accept, particularly leaving school with a mechanical engineering degree.

Since I'm a resident of Michigan, UM is much more affordable.

Any opinions on attending Penn w/ debt vs. attending Michigan without it?

Thanks!

do you want to become a mechanical engineer? or are you open to / seeking other uses for a mechanical engineering degree (perhaps in combination with business)?

My interest now is in ME, though I applied for the Fisher program (didn’t get in, but would reapply after my first year if I attended Penn). So, the short answer is yes, I am interested in combining with business.

Honestly I think UM is such a fantastic deal + with Ross business its an awesome combo. I would be hard pressed to pass up Michigan in your case, in spite of Penn being slightly stronger. If you are a top student you can really get a lot out of Michigan.

Well here is how I view it. College is definitely going to have an impact on the rest of your life. Its not just the brand name I’m talking about, the experience will shape your future. So I would recommend making the choice without monetary considerations unless you’re really strapped. The education will definitely help pay for itself, especially at Penn. That said, both are great schools so go with the one that fits you better. Especially if you have confidence about getting into fisher, go for Penn with other parts of the school being of comparable quality/fit. Even if you don’t, keep in mind that the name/prestige does help with job finding but don’t base your decision solely on that.

If by significant you mean 100k+ over 4 years, take Michigan. The opportunity to attend a top school for free is amazing, take it.

personally i would rather be debt-free than have to live in debt for the next few decades of my life… My uncle is owns the pediatrics department of his hospital after attending yale and he is still paying off his college loans lol owned… hes like in his 40s…
