Penn vs. Vanderbilt

It really angers me (if true) that I had to pay full-tuition at a HYP feeder school for my kid so that someone like the happymedguy could go for free. I probably helped supplement his tuition. I’m not sure he (or she) appreciates that. For someone coming from such a tough life, he (or she) certainly should.

P.S. My “sheltered” son leaves for Iraq in one week. He opted to serve his country after college and before grad school. He really NEVER had a silver spoon either. We all worked very hard to put him (and my D) through school! He never felt he was entitled to anything.
He is a remarkable young man. And he didn’t go to HYP.

“Nevertheless, anyone who refers to Vanderbilt as a “charm school” and Penn as a “trade school” reveals a great deal of ignorance, naivete, and, quite frankly, immaturity–regardless of his/her age, background, education, etc.”

You’re right. I should’ve refrained from such awkward attempts at humor.

“My “sheltered” son leaves for Iraq in one week. He opted to serve his country after college and before grad school. He really NEVER had a silver spoon either. We all worked very hard to put him (and my D) through school! He never felt he was entitled to anything.

You should be very proud of your son. Thank you for his service.

“I probably helped supplement his tuition. I’m not sure he (or she) appreciates that. For someone coming from such a tough life, he (or she) certainly should.”

The chances I attended the same HYP feeder school as your children are highly remote.

That being said, I am very grateful for my benefactors. But I deserved to be there as much as the full-tuition students.

^ No one “deserves” anything.

No one deserves to attend an “elite” institution. Most folks have to earn that right. .

Getting back to topic: I would be thrilled if my D could get in to either Penn or Vandy. For the record, she does NOT attend a feeder school.

I disagree with those who say that people don’t know about Penn. People know all about it all over the country. That might all change when Joe Paterno retires, but right now it’s true.

^ Go Nittany Lions! :)

It is also pretty ironic that someone in the medical field (like a happy medical student) would not be aware of the cutting edge research that the Vanderbilt Medical Center is doing in the field of neurological disorders such as Parkinsons. Vanderbilt has surpassed many of the “elite” medical institutions in this field. For someone in the medical field to call Vanderbilt a backwoods institution or a “charm school” is absurd. The Vanderebilt graduate nursing program is also known to be one of the best in the country!

I understand that these are graduate programs. However, the medical world is well aware of Vanderbilt’s excellence.

^^ But the high school world of happyhighschooler is not.

Alright, we’ve fed the ■■■■■ enough already…

happymedstudent is a ■■■■■ par excellence- the fact he has managed to ruffle so many feathers is really a testament to his fantastic talent at ■■■■■■■■…

e.g. my sister is in medical school and there is no way she would have the time to be on CC more than once a day (if at all)…

As the OP, I feel I have some say in this discussion :)

Disagree. More specifically for Penn, I feel that in certain industries (i.e. Nursing, or Business because of Wharton) these schools are nationally regarded and not just regional.

Additionally,

You know I really don’t care whether my neighbor knows about the prestige or excellent programs of Vandy/Penn/Chicago/Whatever etc… What I do care about are my future employer’s knowledge and as I have already said, in industries such as business I feel like these names will be recognized. Future employers, likely educated secondarily, would know of these schools, and recognize the degrees. Furthermore, they both have extensive almuni who can help with attaining an internship position or job.

“happymedstudent is a ■■■■■ par excellence- the fact he has managed to ruffle so many feathers is really a testament to his fantastic talent at ■■■■■■■■…”

You make me blush…

“e.g. my sister is in medical school and there is no way she would have the time to be on CC more than once a day (if at all)…”

“happymedstudent” is who I aspire to be, not who I am currently.

As I’ve stated in a prior post, I am still in college.

I considered the username “happyPREmedstudent,” but it really doesn’t have as nice a ring to it.

my middle school history teacher went to vandy. and then i had a lab teacher in high school that went to vandy. good school for teachers.

i do believe the momofwildchild just did get happymedstudent to fess up to the fact that he/she is in fact not a med student. Took a while, but mother knows best ;)

"i do believe the momofwildchild just did get happymedstudent to fess up to the fact that he/she is in fact not a med student. Took a while, but mother knows best "

We all already knew that he isnt a med student. You dont have to kiss ass… hahaha

This thread totally went away from the original idea lol oh well.

Silly sadpremedstudent…

Forget Penn and Vanderbilt. See what sort of thread they create? Go to Dartmouth instead. :)

Lol, had this thread been a Dartmouth vs. Penn thread, schools that are on par with each other, it probably wouldn’t have degraded into bashing as quickly.

Anyway, happymedstudent - where do YOU go to college? I’m curious. All you seem to do is bash Penn - admittedly a fun thing to do to schools from which you were rejected.

It’s funny that happymedstudent respects UChicago, a school that undeniably loses the vast majority of cross-admits to Penn and has lower SAT averages, HS GPA, etc. Seems like he has a personal agenda, huh?
