How respected is Penn's Psychology Department? Which fields are the strongest at Penn (i.e., Evolutionary Psych, Social Psych, etc.)? Please do not turn this thread into a battle zone. Thank you.

In the last National Research Council (NRC) ranking–from the 1990s and a bit stale, but one of the most respected rankings of its kind–Penn’s Psychology Department was ranked #8 in the country:

[NRC Rankings in Each of 41 Areas](http://www.stat.tamu.edu/~jnewton/nrc_rankings/nrc41.html#area40)

The most recent US News ranking of graduate psychology programs ranked Penn #11 in the country:

[Rankings - Psychology - Graduate Schools - Education - US News and World Report](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-psychology-schools/rankings)

Can’t help you much beyond that.

Thanks for the info.

I think Penn’s focus is more on cognitive/behavioral psych…at least that’s what I seem to remember my prof saying in class…

I’m curious as well, so I’m bumping this thread.

I can’t imagine that educational psychology is too lacking, as there is a School of Education on campus, which was a big draw for me. Also, Noam Chomsky went to Penn both as an undergraduate and for his PhD, but that’s more of a fun fact than a qualifier haha.

But yeah, I’d love to know which fields are strongest at Penn, or what Penn’s psych department is known for.

Penn’s psych department was the first such in the country, and Penn is home to one of the top 5 neuroscience and cognitive science programs in the US - Penn’s psych dept is also usually ranked in the top 10. It is and has been the home of a number of luminaries in the field.

In short, it is HIGHLY respected, and many of its PhD students teach at places like: Stanford, Harvard, Columbia, Penn, Swarthmore, etc. It only has 5 per year.

The Gourman Report, one of the most respected graduate rankings, places the department at #2 in the country:
