i applied for penn’s SAAST bioengineering bprogram for this summer. i believe that at the end of the 3 week course, you do get college credits (and a grade too i believe). i was wondering if anyone has any input on this program. im awaiting my admittance decision for this program and for columbia’s biotech program. do any of you know which one is better? columbia’s does not give college credit btw.

oh and how will this program look in terms of application to PENN next year. if i perform exceptionally in this program will it boost chances at getting into penn? how does the program itself look in terms of admissions to penn?

I wouldn't necessarily say it will help you get into Penn if you do well, but it might show the admissions committee that you are definitely interested in being here. If you are accepted, enjoy your time on campus and try to find out if this is where you want to spend the next 4 years.

Oh, and the essays are really important. So, maybe you can tie in your experience with SAAST into your answers.

I can't comment on the bio program, but I took a photography class in SAAS -- that's what originally got me interested in Penn -- and in retrospect, it was very helpful for writing the "Why Penn" essay. I doubt it counts much when they're reading your application (Everyone I know who took Columbia's summer high school classes got rejected from Columbia) but it's a definitely a worthwhile activity in its own right.

xwang90,
For PENN programs, I only applied SAAST.
I applied for RSI, but I got rejected.
I was planning to apply to PAVE at vanderbelt, but I had a hunch that I'll get into this one, so I ended up not applying to PAVE.

PENN is the only IVY League school with a biomedical engineering program that is ranked at the top. PENN for last year ranked 6/7th, and all the rest ranked in the 20 / 30s. So I assume PENN's biotech is better than Columbia's since it has better facilities or research rojects.

thanks; definitely going -- had offers from UChicago and NYU, and nearly a full ride from UMD (home state), but Penn "fit," as they say in the admissions game.
best of luck to you.
