I'm a future graduating high school senior from California that's very nervous about being accepted into the school's I applied to:

Cal State Fullerton (Top of my list)
Cal State Long Beach (Strong SU - Reach School)
San Francisco State University
Cal State Dominguez Hills
Fresno State University

My GPA is really low - 2.7 and my SAT score, which I heard is fairly decent sits at a 1580 (out of 2400)

I really want to go to Fullerton, but I'm not too sure if I'll get accepted.
Anyone know my chances?

Footnote: I'm also making up my English 10 Class, at a local community college and my Algebra 2 class, I'm retaking this year at my high school, to nullify my previous D's. I really screwed up my sophomore year. Not sure if the new grade I receive will affect my current overall GPA, but it's still necessary for me to retake these classes. I have spoken with Admissions at Fullerton and they said making these courses up is fine and will not be held against me as long as it is completed before June, which they will be.

Are you in the Fullerton service area, i.e. Orange County?

I’m located in Burbank, CA. About 45 miles away? Plan on living around the area though.

Well, I’d say CSULB and CSUF unfortunately wouldn’t be sure things. As you know, most of these schools are decreasing their freshman admits. Whether the major you are declaring is impacted is important as well, but I think both CSULB and CSUF are campus impacted. For these two it will be an uphill battle with your stats.

I would guess Burbank is in the CSUN service area. Does your high school have an admissions agreement with CSUN?

I see…

Well to be honest, I’m not looking at CSUN at all. I’m trying to get a grasp of what life would be like on my own, just a greater understanding of independence, going to CSUN would be a 15 minute drive to campus, and would keep me residing at my parents house. Which isn’t what I’m going for at all.

I’m hoping CSUF accepts me, but if not there’s always Santa Monica Community, ughhh.

I was just looking at CSUF’s collegeboard profile again and my SAT scores seem to be above average over the current freshmen demograph.

CSUF’s Freshmen Middle 50% SAT Scores:

-Critical Reading Range:
430-530

My Score: 530

-Math Range:
450-560

My Score: 540

& of course Writing is not reported, but I scored a 510 on that section…

Wouldn’t my SAT encourage my acceptance? I mean, I know my score really isn’t that great, but it’s evident it’s at least on par with their current Freshmen…

Chin up. If it needs to be a CSU, look at San Marcos also. Also, Monterey Bay.

Like I mentioned, some of those average scores can be skewed by enrollees that had to be admitted due to local agreements. This year is seeing record numbers of applicants to the CSU’s. I think in these economic conditions alot of people are being forced to stick close to home. I agree with getting away and doing your own thing. I’m sure you’ll find a challenging place to land. If CSUF is at the top of your list, by all means apply. My son was rejected by CSULB last year with stats that should have put him in if you view against published averages, but his intended major was impacted there and the uni reduced their total freshman admits by 20%. These trends continue to deteriorate.

And if my intended major is not impacted?

Also, on my application should I list my intended major?
I’m not too sure and don’t know if I want to make that decision yet. Right now
it sits at Political Science, but that could change at the blink of an eye…

I’d say if your intended major is impacted at a university, but you aren’t dedicated to that major yet, apply as undeclared. If the intended major is not impacted, it couldn’t hurt to declare the major. Maybe they’ll be giving preference to candidates in less popular majors.
