I’m considering applying to Bowdoin ED, but I am kind of worried about how well I’d fit in there. I love school and am sort of a geek, though not in a bad way; I’m not reclusive or anything. I would rather talk about Hemingway than baseball. I’m not into sports at all…I haven’t played on a team since junior high and I don’t watch them. Are there really that many preppy jocks? I’ve been hoping what I hear is a gross exagerration. I feel like I might not have much in common with people, and it’s so small. Any advice?

you will fit in well. i didn't like sports, or at least talking about them. my freshman year i was often up until the wee hours discussing joyce, or miller with friends, and comparing our favorite parts, reading them aloud, etc. i guess that sounds pretty geeky, or at least passionate about books. and, you might notice at bowdoin that those who like sports manage to like them in a geeky way, too. like compiling absurd excel sheets, creating complex rational choice theories on recruitment, etc. of course there are those who wouldn't do that, but there is certainly what you're looking for.

You may have already applied, but basically it's half-and-half: it's half athletes and half non-athletes. You can very easily mingle between both worlds, but it's also incredibly easy to be on one side of the divide.

morganna, i'm w/ you. never done any sports and concerned about the preppiness. i love the school, but haven't been there with the full student body. is it really that bad??

^^^i wouldn't apply early if you haven't been with the student body. it would reallllllllly suck if you showed up next fall and found out that it was the wrong fit for you.

Hey there! It's so odd because i'm the same way as you---I wouldn't say that's being geeky! It's being "different" but in a great way. I've always felt the same way. I'd also rather talk about Hemingway (very interesting writer to talk about) than baseball, or about Kafka's Metamorphosis, existentialism. I'm with you all the way. We should talk sometime! I'm hoping Bowdoin is like that too.

It's sad but true. Chem-Free housing is the intellectual hot spot your first year. Sign up for that. Kids who live there drink still, but most of them don't. I was in it my first year and it was where I had the best, deepest conversations on films and art.

As a Bowdoin kid in the chem-free dorm this year, let me reassure you that there exist people here who will happily discuss anything intellectual into the wee hours of the night. Last week one of my really good friends and I had a massive debate on the reality of factual historical events and their pertinence to the entire course of history at like 1 am on a Tuesday. It was awesome--that kind of thing happens all the time in my dorm.

I had the same exact concerns about the student body as you did when I came here. It's true that there are your preppy jocks, but there's also definitely a niche for everyone here. I found mine almost instantly in the chem-free system (where it is possible to drink outside the dorm) and couldn't be happier.

Chem free housing...
guys and girls?
is it a dorm situation?
more than one type of people?
Thanks! Any info. is appreciated.

Even the preppy jocks are super nice. I know a guy who was captain of the squash team and played on one other team, I can't remember which. Anyways, it's evident that he was a "jock" but he is one of the nicest people ever.
